Re: Tin Mining N.E. Tasmania

By Jeff Harris. I have just noticed these two postcards. Both of them show views of the Briseis tin mine which was located within the township of Derby. The lower postcard was published by Spurling & Son, Launceston and printed in Prussia (No. 207). The Briseis mine was owned by the Krushka Brothers...

Re: Introduction

Hello Harry, Thank you for your response. You are probably correct regarding the rules mentioning company names in this forum. I tend to be very pedantic when it comes to rules and regulations. The reasons I did not mention the name of the auction house are that the proprietor is a prominent member ...

Re: Webster Rometch Cards

The vehicle you describe may well have been a charabanc, which were first used in England just prior to WW1. The word charabanc comes from the French "char a bancs" - a seated carriage. Charabancs were still in use in Adelaide until the 1950s. I had several rides in one, as it was hired by our local...

Re: Pictorial perforation misplaced

I think the left side perforation is from the old gauge 11.8 perforating machine used in Hobart. Obviously the gauge 11 machine that was being used broke down and was taken away for repair. Presumably the other two gauge 11 machines were in use and for some reason this sheet was added to the complet...

Re: "Hobart / Tas" Double Ring CDS

No postage has been paid on this postcard as the stamp had been previously used and then later attached to this card. The previous cancel is that of the first machine canceller used in Hobart. If this card had passed through the machine canceller, the four horizontal lines [vertical in this instance...

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H

I am certain you have the correct year. The CARAGLIO cancel looks like 10th. March 1900. The card was then readdressed to Rome [ROMA] and received on the 11th. March 1900. It looks like it was franked with a penny pictorial and consequently taxed 5 centimes. When the card reached its destination, I ...

Re: RE-CONSIDERING CURRENT RARITY RATINGS - ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thank you for your response Ross. I thought it might be something 'new', but not to be. Perhaps I should stick to the subjects I know something about. If I had researched this properly, I would have found the answer at Figure 77 on page 19 of 'Tas. Hand Cancellations 1913-88 Part. 1. Hence, the old ...

Re: RE-CONSIDERING CURRENT RARITY RATINGS - ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I was just having another look at this topic and noticed the two cancels of Legana. The cancel on the 45c. Land Conservation stamp looks [to me] more like a Type 6T cancel. The letters are slightly larger than those of Type 8 and the arcs shorter. I am aware that some type 8 cancels have shorter arc...

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!

One possibility for this to occur is that the date line was badly damaged and removed from the canceller. Each item of mail was then cancelled with the canceller 'sans' dateline. Then there would have been a trip to the local newsagent to purchase a cheap datestamp, and that was then applied to the ...

Re: Need help identifying a Post Office from the Cancel

Hello Tim, The postmark looks like Launceston although it is partly obscured by the Minneapolis duplex cancel. Back in those days, only the larger towns had the time on their circular datestamps. Obviously, I don't know how much you know about Tasmania, but Launceston is the second largest city in T...

Re: 3d Pictorial - TAS w/m - thin paper or reverse impressio

On page 13 of Keith Lancasters book, he states that he had found two used examples of the Twopence Halfpenny value printed on 'extremely thin paper'. When I was in Adelaide last year, I was shown a used Fivepence stamp with very thin paper. I recall that only the frame of the design of the stamp cou...

Sixpence Pictorial with Compound Perforations

There is an item on Ebay that is purported to be a Sixpence Pictorial with compound perforations. It has a starting price of US$325.00 and is listed as a 1905 issue. It is obviously an Electrotype printing, the first of which was issued in late 1910. The stamp appears to be perforated in gauge 12.4 ...

My brother-in-law who lives at Memana [on Flinders Is.] has provided some information about R.J.Mcilroy. He was the Government Medical Officer on the Island for a few years about 1970. Hello Jerry, The 2d. Bright Violet punctured "OS" is not listed by Lancaster. As you mentioned it is not listed in the BW catalogue.
