Re: Incoming boxed SHIPLETTER Marking

Thanks for the info. It being a Hobart marking explains why it is dated a day before the Launceston arrival back-stamp. I've attached some images of the sad front of this cover.

My earliest Tasmanian postal history item is 1836.

Regards, John.

Incoming boxed SHIPLETTER Marking

This is the reverse of an OHMS ship letter from Sydney (27 FE 1851) to Launceston. I'm familiar with the dated Launceston arrival stamp (15 MA 1851) but haven't seen the boxed marking before. Can anyone explain its meaning? Is it particularly scarce?

1910 2d Pictorial Blotchy Printing

Wolfgang Keilmann & myself have been having a correspondence in "Sydney Views" regarding the 1910 2d Pictorial Electrotype printing in a dry ink resulting in an ugly blotchy appearance. The shade is listed as dull grey-violet by Brusden-White (ACSC T36C). All four of our combined used examples are P...

Re: Known plate numbers on Pictorials (Recess)

On page 81 of Tinsley's book, there is a photo of the 2.5d Plate 2. The interesting thing is the location. It is immediately to the left of the perforation guide cross - the same as your mystery marking. That can't be a coincidence. The numeral 2 is complete & much thinner than your marking but that...

Re: Known plate numbers on Pictorials (Recess)

Hi Jerry, I don't have the 1/2d plate number to compare your item. However I do have 1d Plate Nos 1, 2, 3 (with abnormal watermark), 4, 7 & 8. The numeral "1" on the 1d is a much thicker numeral than the other numerals. It also has serifs which most of the others don't (except for No. 7). However yo...

Re: Known plate numbers on Pictorials (Recess)

I can't add any new Plate numbers to your list but I can add something unusual. I have 1d Plate 3 with reversed watermark. I'd be interested if any other watermark varieties exist on the recess printings - without or without plate numbers. I'm happy to post a scan if someone would like to tell me ho...
