Re: registration labels

Kevin Burt's book was published in 2018. The short title is:
"Post Office Registration Labels."

Tasmania is covered in detail on pages 33 to 39. There are a
few updates in very recent issues of Philately from Australia.

Comment on T G Railways issue dates

We refer to the article by Dave Elsmore in The Courier , No. 56 on the issue date correction as published in December, 2013. On reading page 18 more carefully, we see that that " No less quantity than 12 tickets will be sold ." This remark applies to the illustrated extracts shown by the author. It ...

Re: Perfs on earliest T.G. Rys

The perf 12 (actually 11.8) is found not only on these railway newspaper stamps inscribed T G Rys but on the locally printed Revenue overprints (Platypus type & St George and Dragon) and as a corrective line of perforation on postage stamps where the outer edge missed the perforation in Melbourne (P...

Is there anything that can be done to banish this forger for good,
or at least, for a very long time? He keeps changing his identity
but is not stopped by eBay or anyone else.

Re: Papermaker's watermark on 1d Chalon (pelure paper)

A little while ago I espied a reference in Philately from Australia , Vol 3 (1951), pp.8-13, on papermaker's watermarks for Australasian colonies. As far as Tasmania is concerned, we consider the 1d Chalon head on pelure paper, which is recorded with papermaker's watermark. The above article by RWT ...

Short note on some early Beer Duty listings

Note on early Beer Duty listings We are mainly concerned with early beer duty listings. It has been difficult to compile these listings as these stamps are hard to obtain and are often found in damaged condition, due to the strict rules for their use. They were supposed to be destroyed after use. Th...

A short note on railway stamp listings

This note considers some early reports about Tasmanian railway stamps. A the start, we acknowledge the meagre reports about railway stamps for Tasmania in early reports. Thus, the three volume catalogue by J.-B. Moens (1893) recorded a number of railway stamps for various mainland Australian colonie...

That 2/6 Dragon overprinted REVENUE wmk '1'

The Craig & Ingles catalogue listed a 2/6 Dragon overprinted REVENUE with watermark double-lined '1' as No. 30. This item was previously listed in Forbin's catalogue (1910) as No. 22. Morley's catalogue also listed this item. Craig & Ingles cannot be criticised for listing this item, given that the ...

Re: Alleged 1s on 3d Platypus 1913?

Let's have a fresh look at the alleged 1/- on 3d Platypus. We take a good look at Forbin's catalogue (1915) as well as the Craig & Ingles catalogue. Craig & Ingles list it as No. 60 in their catalogue, corresponding to No. 42 in Forbin. We turn to Forbin's listing. This stamp is stated to be a surch...

Basset Hull's PTPO wrappers

We consider the PTPO wrapper used for mailing Basset Hull's journal "The Federal Philatelist." Earliest date recorded is 19 January 1891, according to Ingles' Chapter 15 in Tinsley's book on Tasmanian stamps and postal history. It may be of interest to record which journals it was mailed to. I can r...

Private roulettes on Chalons

The major listings of the private roulettes are in Tinsley's book (1986), Robson Lowe, vol. 4 (1962) and the Stanley Gibbons catalogue. They don't seen to be 100% consistent. The serrated 19 items seem to be reasonably consistent, bar the 1/- which is only in Tinsley and recent Gibbons listings. We ...

Re: Serrated 19 on Chalons

Further on the serrated 19, Gibbons mentions a 1d carmine perf 10 on three sides and serrated 19 on the fourth. Can this possibly be genuine? Jerry notes that serrated 19 was used at Hobart. But was it done by Walch or someone else, perhaps a small post office in or near Hobart? Tinsley doesn't ment...

Re: Known plate numbers on Pictorials (Recess)

Some interesting feedback from John and from Jerry. The inverted watermark on the 1d
with plate number is apparently not recorded in the literature. The plate number on the
½d stamp is also unclear to me as well as other readers. It would be nice to know what
it could be.

Re: Serrated 19 on Chalons

This reply from Jerry is most helpful. I should have checked Tinsley earlier. Also, recent editions of Gibbons' catalogue say the serrated 19 stamps were used at Hobart while Robson Lowe, Volume 4, stated that they were used at Deloraine (which is over 40 Km west of Launceston). Now we see that Robs...

Very interesting material on sealing labels. There was also one in the Clemente collection.

An image of the Money Order label (mentioned by Hobbit123) would be welcome. Would
it be possible to illustrate an example on the BB?

Tinslay's book lists a number of known plate numbers on the De La Rue printings of the Pictorials of 1899-1900. These are: ½d - 1 1d - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 2d - 1, 2, 3, 4 2½d - 1, 2 3d - 1 4d - 1 These are the recess printed stamps produced in London, not later printings produced in Melbourne. Often...

A few 2½d Platypus pairs have survived as they were used to make up 5d stamp duty in the late 1950s
and early 1960s. Cheques bearing a pair of 2½d Platypus exist.

This variety seems to be missing from Gibbons' catalogue, Robson Lowe's Encycopaedia, Vol. 4
and from Tinsley's book (1986). It is probably quite rare. I am not sure if this variety has ever
been offered in auction but I could ask around.

Gary Diffen correctly points out that the ½d Sideface is known on unwatermarked paper. While it could have been intended as a plate proof, such sheets were also overprinted with the word SPECIMEN and used for presentation purposes. Certainly, these unwatermarked printings look much better than the n...
