Re: TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES

I'm cleaning out images from my computer and came across this cover. The cover is not in my collection (I think) and I'm not sure where it came from but thought I would share it. I was attracted to the postmark without the zero in the year.

Re: OS PERFINS on 6d PICTORIALS SIDEWAYS to DESIGN - HOW COMMON?

Ross -- I've been researching the OS perfins mostly on the lithographed pictorials for about a year. I've read all the literature I could find since about 1912 and have not found any production data. Based on my own collection of 1/2d and 2d lithographed pictorials, it appears that the OS sideways i...

1d Sheet with New(?) Selvedge Marking

Earlier this year I purchased a full sheet of the 1d recess with plate number 3. After examining the sheet I found a marking in the selvedge above stamp position 10 that I have not seen previously. The marking is not complete but is similar to three points of a star. Has anyone seen this marking bef...

Avoca Date Stamp Variety

Attached are two Avoca cancellations. They appear common...but are they! Casually reading the dates appear to be JA 19 10 and 15 MR 10. The year is not complete but based on the curved figure of the 0 it appears to be 1910. However, these stamps were not printed until December 1910 and first used in...

Re: Early dates for Perforated T and Perforated OS Pictorials

OK...I went and looked at all my Plates 3 and 4 perf T multiples (which would have been in the first production run of the T perfins on the 2d lithos). I found the one below most interesting dated 28 Nov 1902. It shows six pins on the vertical portion of the T, but on the upper stamp the sixth pin i...

Re: Early dates for Perforated T and Perforated OS Pictorials

Here's another first day of usage. This example from Hobart is different from the others posted above because it has only 5 holes in the vertical position. The 2d pair from Gladstone has 6 holes and Mr Groom's 1d from Melton Mowbray has 7 holes. In my previous posting I speculated that the differenc...

Re: Early dates for Perforated T and Perforated OS Pictorials

While examining material I purchased from K. Lancaster a number of years ago, I came across this 2d litho pair with the NO 1 02 first day of usage for the "T" perfin. The year date (02) is faint but obvious under magnification. It is interesting to note that the number of pins differs from Mr Groom'...

Re: TASMANIAN CROWN SEALS - a survey

I need some help with this one! It appears to be a crown seal although the letters appear to be read in the opposite direction. Of the letters that can be read, I haven't found a match to a Tasmanian town. Anyone have the answer to this one? Thanks!!

Re: POST 1912 MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS - POST YOUR IMAGES HERE

Can anyone identify this manuscript, apparently used in 1917. Even though it's not complete, I thought the handwriting may be sufficient. It may not be a Tasmanian town. Thanks, Jerry

Re: SECOND ALLOCATION BARRED NUMERALS - A LISTING

Kudos to Mr. Hardinge for the updated list of Second Allocation Barred Numerals. This area is clearly NOT my expertise but I noticed that the list states two types of the Launceston numeral 52. I have for sometime been sorting my 52's by three types so I was wondering if I have a new type. The scans...

Triple perforations on Pictorials

Double perforations on Tasmanian stamps are well-known and documented from the first perforations on the Chalons through the pictorial issues. I have, however, never seen any triple perforations. The example below is not complete but does appears to be evidence of a triple perforation on a 2d typogr...

Re: OS PERFINS - THE MISSING HOLE in O VARIETY

Below is a scan of the only 1/2d litho OS sideways stamp I have ever seen. The OS sideways stamps were the first OS punctures on the halfpenny lithos (and 2d lithos) and not many were made. I would like to know if others have examples and if it exists with the missing pin variety. I would like to pl...

Re: THE PICTORIALS - EARLIEST USE - PLEASE POST YOUR IMAGES HERE

While doing some research I came across an article by Mr Randall Askeland that contained a number of pictures of pictorials with 1899 dates (all off cover). The full article can be found in the Special Centennial Edition of The Courier, dated December 1999. I've listed below the additional towns or ...

Re: Can you identify the origin of this 1857 cover ?

The "signature" is actually the letter carrier's endorsement which was required (but didn't always get done) on every posted letter during this period. The endorsement consisted of the post office name and date of pick up. This endorsement reads "Bothwell" with the date of 15/6/57. The barred numera...

Production of Perf OS Pictorial Stamps

Does anyone know how pictorial stamps with the perf OS were produced? There is a very short description in Tinsley's book that a forme of 24 OS cliches was created that punched 24 stamps at a time (4 rows of 6 stamps). This doesn't seem very efficient and wouldn't seem to work for the vertical forma...

Re: Caveat Emptor - "postally used" Fiscals !?!

Attached is what I believe is a fake cancel on a revenue-used fiscal. There appears to be light pen marks on the stamp below the cancel. The trunk of the 7 seems thicker and the overall width of the 7 seems wider than a "genuine" 7. (This assumes of course that the one other barred 7 that I have in ...
