Where is Yendis/Gendis?
Its not only postal history collectors that need to find the location of old Tasmanian towns. In my real job, in the Mollusc department of the Australian Museum, we are slowly making a database of the collection, and are entering the latitude and longitude of specimens to assist future information r...

Robert Jolley and his postcards
Robert Jolley was a Melbourne publisher, importer and businessman who published attractive Australian postcards between 1899 (possible 1898) and 1905. In this first article I give an outline of Jolley, his business operations and an overview of his cards. In a later article I will discuss his first ...

Re: Tasmanian Postcard from Archives of C.G. Röder, Leipzig
Here is the reply from Helmfried Leurs in Germany. He publishes "The Postcard Album" which is the authority on history of German postcard publishers. The writing on back reads (translated) "Oceania", then below "archives copy, Roeder publishing dept, Leipzig" The number "5846" is likely a ppc dealer...

Most interesting, Ross. I'll send the image off to Helmfried Luers who publishes "The Postcard Album" to see what he thinks.

Re: CARDS PUBLISHED by A. MATHER & Co., HOBART
I think that the painted aspect of the card Ross shows is due to the hand colouring applied to the b&w printed card. Here is the example I have - it looks very much the same as Ross' card (except his isn't individualised by having a corner missing). 2247F.jpg This card if from the first series of Ma...

Series A cards by J. Walch & Sons
Walch's published 34 different series of postcards, but one series, Series A, is particularly rare. The only example I know of is shown below: 4476F.jpg 4476B.jpg The full title of the series is given on the back of the card - Series A.-20,000. For other Walch series, the number indicates the number...

Re: REAL PHOTO CARDS by J.C. BREADEN - POST YOURS HERE
But who was J.C. Breaden, the man behind the photos? Below is an article from the Mercury from 1947, recording his photographic work. His photographic output was substantial, as photographs and postcards. He was born in 1877, and died in 1947. For most of his life he lived at 5 Ratho Street, Lenah V...

Re: Who was the serial correspondent "M.S."?
Dear John Campton and Bulletin Boarders, I have acquired five more cards sent by the Serial Correspondent (Miss M Scott) - numbers 26, 46, 72, 101, and 100 (or 160 - hard to read). One of them, illustrated below, is a NSW card. It is not postmarked, so we don't know if she was travelling in NSW when...

Re: Tasmania salmon ponds at plenty
Hello Tasmat, 1. Is this a postcard or a photograph? If there is nothing on the back it is a photograph. To be a postcard, it needs the words POST CARD printed on the back. 2. As for 1. 3. There are initials on the front bottom right, but I can't work out what they are. 4. As for 1. 5. This is a pos...

"The Tasmanian Mail" postcards
"The Tasmanian Mail" was a weekly newspaper published in Hobart in the period 1877-1921. With the Christmas issues of 1905 and 1906, they included a page of postcards, perforated, ready to be torn out and used. This is an example of one of the cards: 3657F.jpg You can see the perforations on the lef...

White's Series - Who was the publisher?
Cards identified as 'White's Series E.Verrell Photo" are not uncommon among southern Tasmanian views. There seems to be about 20 of them, in a coloured series and in a b&w series, published about 1908. But who was White, the publisher? There was a White who was a large stationer in Queenstown, but i...

Tasmanian Postcards Printed in Japan
Ross mentioned some time ago that he had seen a postcard printed in Japan, and postulated that it was published by Spurling. Here below is a card, marked on the back as "Made in Japan" but no indication of who the publisher was. If this exact same view appears on a Spurling card it would add weight ...

Re: Who was the serial correspondent "M.S."?
Hi John, Its great that you can fill out the story on the serial correspondent, and even put a name on here. Miss M Scott is quite an intriguing story. As you say, she must have been a bit of a bit of a troubled soul, to send off postcards at that rate - 200 in a single year! And she must have been ...

The Australian Rowing Championships were held on the Derwent River on 20 April, 1910. Tasmania only managed third place. The event was celebrated by the card shown in the previous post. While cataloguing the Walch postcards, I came across the card I include now. I bet it was sent by someone associat...

Who was the serial correspondent "M.S."?
In 1908 a correspondent in Hobart sent a series of cards to a gentleman in South Africa. In the cards that I have just been adding to my web site, I came across three of her cards, which she numbered 18, 23 and 26. The correspondence is a travelogue, taking the reader on a tour, by her words and the...

How to buy postcards in 1906
I have been reading the correspondence of 1906 between J. Walch and Sons and their London agent. This is wonderfully preserved in the Archives Office of Tasmania. Walch's were the main stationers in Hobart and published lots of postcards. But they also imported large quantities of cards from England...

Walch Series B-24,000. How to turn winter into summer.
In 1905, J. Walch and Sons published their first series of printed colour postcards. They had done hand-coloured cards earlier, but this was their first series of cards printed in colour. The printer was C.G. Röder of Leipzig, Germany. Walch's agent in London sent them 12 cards from the 1904 Wide Se...

Organising the Walch VIgnetted Cards
J. Walch & Sons published six series of vignetted cards in the years 1900-1904. These are all undivided back cards. They have different features that allow them to be dated to year. There are big differences between the years, except between 1901 and 1902, where the only difference is what is capita...

Postcard by H. Dart
This is an interesting postcard. Under the writing on the front of the card it says "Blow Hole, Brown's River. H. Dart Photo, Hobart". I had never heard of H. Dart but Long's book on Tasmanian photographers lists him, without any detail. On this Bulletin Board Ross has posted a photograph by him. At...

Wonderful, Malcolm! You have a complete set of Walch's 1901 series. This is the first time I have seen some of these cards, particularly the Walch's Corner card. I now understand the series of Walch's vignetted cards of 1900 to 1904, as listed below. Most of this information comes from Walch's Liter...

There are two things I don't know about the card below: where is the Sphinx Rock, and who published the card? I have several other cards with similar backs; printed in green with 'Post Card' in a fancy font, and an acorn-like symbol below the double line. One is of 'Sorell Creek Falls'; where is tha...
