Many thanks to Revenuer for these images.
What is the basis for assuming that these high values were first issued in or after 1919?
At any rate they were withdrawn from use by 1956 as they were destroyed then.
These dates are given in Craig & Ingles.

Re: Private separations on Chalons
Many thanks to Malcolm Groom for putting up another image of private perfs. Apparently, the oblique roulette shown is the "Oblique roulette 10-10½, possibly at Deloraine?" as listed in Gibbons as SG 95 (2004) but it would be a good idea to say so explicitly. I have just found the Apfelbaum website a...

London printings of Sideface and Plate Numbers
It may be useful to revisit the topic of the plate numbers on the 1d and 2d London printings of the Sideface issues from 1878 onwards. It is well known that De La Rue put plate numbers on the plates they made of the Sideface issues. (See Basset Hull (1890) and Tinsley (1986) for details.) The plates...

Re: Private separations on Chalons
Many thanks to jorija for details of these stamps. We can fix up the Gibbons numbers later if need be. As for the examples in the recent Prestige Sale No. 153, that Ross illustrated recently, the details are: Lot 322 1863-71 Private Separations Roulette 8 6d dull lilac SG 55 horizontal pair, roulett...

Re: Private separations on Chalons
Perhaps jorija could state in detail what separations they are as per Gibbons. This, and Ross's posting, form the start of an accurate checklist as to what is really out there. The published listings may not be as reliable as we would like to think. Possibly, some items listed don't exist as genuine...

Re: Wages Tax Overprint Varieties, etc. on Numerals
Little work has been published on these stamps, apart from the catalogues.
There would be some scope for research on these issues.
NB The 5/- stamps with narrow overprint illustrated by Revenuer are not particularly common.

Re: 1s on 3d Numeral - Emergency Surcharge
Here is a belated response on the 1/- on 3d numeral surcharge. Yes, the basic stamps are perf 11.8 x 11. The Craig and Ingles shorthand is 12 x 11 as explained in their perforation notes in the George and Dragon section. Most likely, they were using an Instanta gauge when measuring the perfs but the...

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
I respond as follows, especially to John Shepherd. We need to state very clearly what we mean by the £1 Revenue stamp. Is it the £1 without Revenue overprint as implied by John or is it the £1 with Revenue overprint? I am well aware of the official notice from Stafford Bird as I have read it many ti...

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
Re: £1 used at Queenstown on Monday 3 December 1900. Regarding the £1 Revenue at Queenstown, I doubt if the customer walked in with a copy of that stamp (either with or without overprint). That day was a Monday as you can check via an online calendar or typing 'cal 12 1900' on a Unix system via a PC...

Private separations on Chalons
It may be of interest to compile a comprehensive and up to date list of Chalons with the private separations, other than the Walch perforations (10 and 11½) and Harris perforations (12½-13). There are a couple of the private roulettes in the Prestige Philately upcoming auction for tomorrow* (a 6d p...

Re: DECIMAL POSTAGE STAMPS USED TO PAY STAMP DUTY ?????!!!!!
In response to Ross's query re decimal postage stamps on receipts. This usage is almost certainly illegal. I recall seeing a 4c Queen of 1966 being used to pay duty on a receipt (in Melbourne). (This was before the High Court said that State duty on receipts was an "excise", whatever that may be, a...

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
In respnse to Ross's comments on the 2/6 imperf at the next Prestige auction (12 Feb 2010), here are a few comments that may help. Ross has told me that Cleveland is a very small place on the Midland highway connecting Launceston and Hobart. It is hard to believe that someone there would want to pos...

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
In response to the last query from Revenuer on backdating the canceller, I don't think there would be any point in backdating 6 months. Wouldn't this amount to a date in May 1900? The legislation was only passed in late October so that preparations for new revenue stamps began around the beginning o...

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
What is the pen-written date underneath that TASMANIA between 8 bars if I may ask?
It is not easy to see from the image.
This is the first example of barred TASMANIA on a £1 Revenue that I've seen. I have
encountered examples on 1d, 2d, 3d and 6d. Does it exist on the Dragon REVENUES?

Re: £1 QV Tablet overprinted REVENUE - postal usage?
This looks interesting! In response to the comments made above, I reply as follows. Ross shows a £1 with Queenstown postmark date DE 3 1900. Where was this example offered if I may ask? Strictly this usage was illegal since postage and revenue stamps had been separated so that the last day of inter...

Australian Archives Office Hobart to Close
Hi all The National archives office in Hobart will close in a couple of years time. I got this information from Martin Walker yesterday. See link http://www.naa.gov.au/about-us/director-general/index.aspx Researchers in Tasmanian stamps will be affected since there is some information relating to po...

Introducing Bill
I live in Melbourne and have an interest in most aspects of Philatelica Tasmaniana. I have a special interest in Tasmanian revenues but the postal and railway issues are also fascinating. I have written a few articles relating to Tasmanian philately from time to time. There is still much more to fin...
