Re: 1900/12 - 2d Pictorial Lettercards - discuss them here!
Three years ago David suggested I post an image of a letter card containing the message that "they had been issued that week"! I have just seen the post after all this time and found the relevant letter card. The front back and contents are posted as requested. 2d lettercard early use front.jpg 2d l...

Re: Tasmanian Map
Laurent, I did a Google search for map images of Tasmania for 1870 and this was located in the National library of Australia. It shows the early names for places but unfortunately is not high resolution although you can see most of the place names such as Circular Head by expanding it in Adobe Photo...

Re: manuscript cancellations
There is a possibility that it is "Torq..." for Torquay reading upwards. The "T' is in the style of the mss. "Torquay" which is one of the more common of the postmasters endorsements although they are all hard to find.

Re: Stamp Duty Hand Stamps
Bill,
All I know is that it was lot 41 in the Gowans Antique sale and realised $350. Did not view it as I discovered it after the sale was over.

Stamp Duty Hand Stamps
This brass hand stamp was noted in a Hobart antique sale run by Gowans Auctions amongst a number of other official brass hand stamps. No others had any philatelic significance.

Re: ½d PTPO envelopes
Bill, The Wellington back stamp on the 1/2d solo franking is 23 Sept 1892 I am unsure what your reference is about in the second para. I do refer to the 1/2d franking on the 2d envelope with additional 1/2d as being in green. I have three examples (mint, CTO and used) but have not seen any others re...

Re: ½d PTPO envelopes
Allen is right. I have re-checked my PTPO collection and the only 1/2d green embossing is in combination with the 2d PO issue. I have one example used to Sydney which is overpaying the rate. My 1/2d single embossing used is in orange and mailed to NZ (Wellington backstamp). It managed to avoid being...

Re: J. Walch & Sons postcards from January 1900
I hope these images (12) are of the cards you mention. They have all been embossed for the 1d postcard rate and I show the address side of one which is insistent with the full set. One card (Mount Wellington) appears to be printed on whiter thicker stock. These are the only cards I have seen mint or...

The gentleman in the centre is Dr Russell Jones, a noted collector of Victoria and former President of The royal Philatelic Society of Victoria. I know the other person but cannot put a name to hime just yet! May be Phil Collas.

Re: Returned Tasmanian Soldiers from 2nd Anglo-Boer War - query
Reference to Tasmanian in the Transvaal War by Bufton shows head shots of all the enlisted men and it is notable that the hats in the postcard images are strikingly similar to the hats worn by the First and Second Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen and are turned up at the right side. The ACH (Australian Co...

Re: TO THE SPRINGS (MT WELLINGTON) BY CHARABANC !!
I have come across another card with a similar view and with Tasmanian Tourist Bureau back. Posted under cover but message is to family members living in Dover and is dated 27 December 1918. There were obviously no laws on overloading but presumably it was loaded more for the benefit of the photogra...

Re: Finding position on 4d Courier
Laurent, I have searched my files and managed to find details for the 1d plating and I am fairly sure the same exists for the 4d but I cannot locate it. It is also likely to have appeared in 'The Victorian Philatelic Record' at some stage by the same author. Pat Malone was a noted collector of Tasma...

The 361 numeral is known used late at Mt Hicks Upper on the 2d lithographed. I have seen it tied on cover and the numeral looked worn and hollow

Re: 4d Chalon Re-entry Varieties
I have located the article in the June 1957 Philately from Australia written by Bill Purves where he explains the plating of the re-entries and roller flaws found in the 2d and 4d Chalons. These appear to have been plated by using the reprint sheets of both values. Sadly this makes the 'plating' sim...
