Re: 4d Chalon Reentry Varieties

Laurent, There are two good articles in the London Philatelist written by O.G Ingles on the printing of the 1d and 4d Chalons which were all from the Perkins Bacon plates which were sent to Tasmania. I will try and find my copies of these articles. Meanwhile there was a small article published in PJ...

Re: Earliest usage of Chalons?

The date stated by Tinsley also correlates with the date of issue recorded by Bassett Hull on page 34...500 sheets of 4d stamps issued on Aug.17 1855.... taken from the notation on the back of the Perkins Bacon invoice sighted by BH. The earliest recorded cover cited by Tinsley is presumably still o...

Cannot answer some of the questions but the road looks to be the 'main road' between Cambridge and Bellerive over Tunnel Hill, similar landscape and looking across to where the highway to the airport cuts through. There were orchards and presumably vegetables grown in the district. This raises anoth...

Re: Unusual 1d Mt Wellington

This stamp has an interesting possibility. In consultation with Geoff Kellow it may be related to a series of stamps known for Victoria which are singles on no watermark paper perforated 14.25 comb. These were believed to be prepared by Ronald Harrison, son of TS Harrison the Commonwealth Printer wh...

Re: BRASS BAND MYSTERY - CAN YOU IDENTIFY LOCATION AND/OR BA

It is very likely that as the ANZAC DAY march began at the top of Macquarie Street that this photograph was taken at the assembly point for the Band at the beginning of the march for 1936. It may even be after they returned from the march to their original assembly point

Re: 2d embossed stamp for envelopes

The 'discovery' of the 2d die used in 1893 really throws the De La Rue entry referred to by Ingles on P.148 in the Tinsley book into question. Easton in "The De La Rue History of British and Foreign Postage Stamps" focusses on the stamp issues only and so the reference to the 2d embossed stamp die m...

Re: WERE CUT-OUT PTPO ENVELOPE INDICIA VALID FOR USE IN 1890

My understanding is that while postal stationery cut=outs were not formally approved for use they were formally banned from use. This occurred in 1902 in the Commonwealth Post Office Regulations. I have an expert currently seeking the exact reference and will update when obtained. It was not unusual...

Re: 1d QV postal card with 'different' SPECIMEN handstamp?!

It is difficult to determine whether it is an 'official' hand stamp or not without an example on some other item. As it does not conform with anything recorded by Butler or material in the McCredie sale it would probably have to stay in the 'interesting possibilities' section until another one turns...

Re: 2d Views Lettercards - One Penny Surcharges

I have been inspired to look for my scans of letter cards and have managed to find the 1903 River Derwent card with the 20 degree ONE PENNY overprint. The full page is reproduced below. The address leaves me with a suspicion that is philatelic but still an important record of how the letter cards we...

Re: 2d Views Lettercards - One Penny Surcharges

Having located a census conducted by Gene Tinsley it confirms my findings when I was collecting these letter cards. The first point to consider is that ALL the cards overprinted at 40 degrees have the scene in red brown. Tinsley only recorded them in this colour and since that census I have only eve...

Halfpenny lithographed - Early dates of use

While working on my Halfpenny lithographed it became apparent that there is a discrepancy in the records regarding the early recorded use for the Halfpenny lithographed. Lancaster records use in February 1903 and states that he 'has heard of a January 1903 use". However according to Note Printing re...

Mike, Not that I am suggesting I know the location but hops were also grown near Huonville by the Frankcombe family from late 1890's along the banks of the Huon River. The hills in the background seem too prominent for the Bushy Park area. Hops were also grown nearer to New Norfolk also by the Shoob...

A Buying List from the Past - The "Good" old days

While sorting through the Forrest collection of Tasmanian circular date stamps I found this Buying list from a London collector who was offering "attractive " prices for Tasmania postmarks. I am guessing the list was prepared in the mid 1960's. Anyone like to sell their Teepookana for 60/-? Maybe E....
