Re: Nyllavert

I can provide a scan and rego label later today if you like. To give a potted history of the office. It initially opened 20.8.1890 and closed 30.9.1898. It seemingly received no numeral or CDS and operated as a sort of sub office, despite the P.M receiving a salary of around 30 pounds per annum, a c...

Re: End of the Hobart first allocation numerals

Peter, any use of the barred obliterator in January 1861 is good. I guess I am wondering if it goes into December 1860.

IN regards the office I listed as "never seen", I mean never seen in the first allocation period.

Re: End of the Hobart first allocation numerals

Jerry I am inclined to believe it to. When you look at a known 1854 cover from Swansea the endorsement on that is a completely different hand to the 1859 cover. Now there was no change of postmaster in that time, so that makes it quite likely. The absence of a numeral endorsement clinches it I would...

Re: End of the Hobart first allocation numerals

Thanks Jerry, earliest barred obliterator I have is 4 Jan 1861, very early. Whilst we are on First allocation numerals, I have never seen the following on cover- 17,29, 30, 37, 65, 66. IN addition, I have never seen the following on cover either: : Leipzig, Tinder Box Bay, Eastern Marshes, Cambridge...

End of the Hobart first allocation numerals

Just a call out for dates. In January 1861 the first allocation numerals in use at Hobart, namely 61, 64, 74, 75 were replaced by the barred obliterators. What are the latest dates known of the numerals and the earliest of the barred obliterators?

Re: Bruny Island postal history

Well if we look at Bruny Island we have the following: Dennes Point open 20.81941-7.12.1984. CDS Types 5, 5s, 5sT KIllora. This was a Free Bag only, not a P.O so no postal markings known Barnes Bay(1). Opened 20 Oct 1851 to 30 Nov 1853. Allocated numeral 67. No CDS known Barnes Bay(2). Opened 1 Aug ...

Re: UNRECORDED DATESTAMP VARIATIONS - ALL ERAS - POST HERE!

Max, this is Relief Stamp(no code) Type R1a. Date is 14th October 1950 and would have been used at Norwood Avenue after it's 18.9.1950 opening it used this rubber relief until it's steel Type 5 CDS arrived sometime between 15 DEcember 1950 and March 1951. Hope this helps.

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!

These would be, respectively. 2bT(ii) first up. The "E" is much smaller than in other similar CDS. Tye second is Type 2bT(i). The letters here are larger than other types. Lastly, Type 2bT(iii), which I made the bars of to be 5mm, 5.5mm. Sometimes one can be up to 1/2mm off as the CDS expands with w...

Re: APPARENT 'TIE' of BN163 to WESTWOOD rather than ROSEVALE?!

Not much doubt that 163 was Westwood's number. 164 to Rosevale, even though the official list has them reversed. This also occurred with Exeter/St Michael, the PMG list had them reversed. IN both cases, the two post offices opened on the same date and were very near one another. 163 is the scarcer o...

Re: Tas Military Postmarks - Unit Postal Station S215

The only possible conclusion here is that Proud is incorrect and that Tas L of C closed 28.5.1946, which coincides with the return of the S215 boxed CDS.

Re: Tas Military Postmarks - Unit Postal Station S215

Have seen a cover dated 31.8.45 from Tas L of C as well. This actually contradicts Proud, which must be wrong. 6MD PDU(postal delivery unit) definitely closed 4.8.1944, so it would seem that some sort of postal service survived at just Anglesea, using this CDS at Tas L of C(Lines of Communication). ...

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !

This is the original type U2 CDS that lasted until about 1914. It's pretty scarce on pictorials, mainly used on parcels I suspect. It's most commonly seen on the 1/- tablet.

By the pictorial era it's 4 digit year had been reduced to two digits.

Latrobe is certainly a Type 7(m)T. When it's the first letter of the day that's different this can be deceptive as this is not shown for the first nine days of each month.

Re: Crotty: Postmasters and Postmarks

John it is certainly not beyond the bounds of possibility at all that Crotty may have closed earlier than 31.5.1914. IN a number of cases, this represents not the date the office closed but the date it officially closed. Sometimes for months afterwards the PMG Dept would search for a successor witho...
