Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !

After too long a time I have decided to bring some order to my collection of the larger post offices of Launceston and Hobart during the Pictorial period. While trying to identify the many Launceston cds I appear to have found a Launceston Type 1 cds with solid stops and code "H" (wide). Dated SP 17...

The Hunt St Peters Pass and Morrison siblings.jpg The Hunt St Peters Pass No 1 1906.jpg In 2016 Des Beechey asked if gentlemen really went hunting with hounds in top hats...based on a Robert Jolley 1902 stylized postcard. Well to answer Des..yes they did. The quarry was normally wallaby or kangaroo...

Re: Murchison River cage

Looks like the same cage, and somewhat overloaded. I believe two men died in 1930 when trying to cross while sitting on a pile of sleepers...it overturned and all were caught in the flood waters. Anyway I have had a good look through Trove and other reference items and found that there was a plethor...

Re: Murchison River cage

Thanks Mike, It is always good to get a different perspective and view of the subject matter. I have attached a different postcard of the same cage. It was postally used by Alice Klimeck of Mt Farrell at Mt Farrell with cds dated FE 10 08, and sent to Vena Batchelor at Gormanston. Alice writes that ...

Murchison River cage

This RPPC circa 1907 shows the newly built cage across the Murchison near Mount Farrell. Photograher has identified themselves as "R.S.H." and noted the photograph as "Harriss crossing Murchison R." M.J. Harris was a noted mining pioneer in the district but I believe it may be James Harrison, the lo...

In Courier 57 June 2014 I briefly touched on this as part of an article on the Emu Bay Railway. The post office opened 20.10.1899 and closed 13.12.1900 with W.J. Heaps postmaster 20.10.1899-30.11.1899 and E.T. Connelly thereafter. When building the Emu Bay railway from Guildford Junction to Zeehan e...

Re: Burke Series of RP cards with West Coast Views

Yes Ross this is a new listing for the Burke Series of postcards of Queenstown. I have been researching this series for the last year and ascertained that there are 18 postcards in the set. The only ones that remain unknown at this stage are Nos. 3, 7, 10, 11,14 and 15. As noted on your TSA site the...

Re: Burke Series of RP cards with West Coast Views

It is just the thing you dont want to happen. Find something that you think is new and the ebay seller fails to send it, even when it is tracked mail. I found and purchased a No. 12 Burke series RPPC "The smelters and reduction works, Queenstown". The interesting and new part is that the back is div...

Re: Early Series of Postcards with West Coast Scenes

It has been nearly five years since Ross published images of two B&W postcards "Queenstown" and "Smelters, Tas.". Since then I have acquired two more. Both vertical images of "Princess Falls, Tas" and "Mt Lyell Haulage, Tas.". I now have three including the "Queenstown, Tas." postcard. All are posta...

Allen Shattens post of 1.8.2010 regarding a blue manuscript cancellation on a Burgess Brothers envelope dated 9.10.1911 has had me on the lookout for similar items. Being an old "bankie" I knew there must be some method involved for this practise. I have now a small collection of 1d Pictorials all c...

Thanks for posting this information.

Sorry forgot to add the part about use of Hobart code S NO 29 1900 on a fiscally used 1/- platypus, fiscal date not fully visible, plus a hand drwn BN 6 also on a 1/- that was fiscally used 22.1.81.

See your point about predating the cds.

Ross I have a 3d platypus stamp duty with large selvage with OC 6 1900 code H but it had not been used previously for stamp duty purposes. Unfortunately it is not on cover so it may not answer your question. Or was this one of the days they decided to use of a lot of stamp duty stamps instead of the...

I am currently researching the postmasters of Crotty and the history of the post office. Four of its postmasters/postmistresses were also the teachers at the Crotty State School. Thanks Mike,

Sorry it took so long to reply. It must have slipped past the radar. You collect the cds from Tullah and Mount Farrell and forget what sort of post office it was and what it was like working there. This is a bit of an eye opener and much appreciated. Thank you.
