Hobart South Post Office
In response to Bmjones 's query seeking information about the South Hobart Post Office, here is a little information. From the "Post Office and Datestamp Compendium" by John Hardinge: " Hobart South, formerly known as Cascade Road, formerly Upper Macquarie Street. Opened 1 Apr 1874 as Upper Macquari...

First Allocation 38 - Numeral and Ms on a pair
Going through my Tasmanian stamps I found this pair of Star watermark 4d Chalons. I came by these years ago before I knew very much about numerals. The interesting thing is that on the left we have Numersal 38 of Jerusalem but the "8' has hardly registered. On the right is the manuscript "38". Does ...

4d Chalon -Roller Flaws Census and plating
Readers of our Journal The Courier will be well aware of the new research into the roller flaws on the 4d Chalons by French TPS member, Laurent Simoni. Laurent is continuing his study of the production of the plate for the 4d Chalon and is seeking pairs, strips and blocks of any 4d Chalon printing t...

Re: watermark of 4d chalon star watermark
Laurent, if it was a part of the border decoration then some of this has a parallel line - but I am far from confident this is the explanation - just my best guess. I found two more examples of Star watermark paper which shows the border decoration but as for the lined numeral paper, nothing so far....

Re: watermark of 4d chalon star watermark
My 'best guess' is that a sheet or star watermark paper, during the papermaking process somehow ended up with a scrap of wire adhering to the papermaking frame and this gave rise to the additional shape above the star. My understanding is that the Perkins Bacon security watermark paper was made by p...

Re: FORGED POSTMARKS, ODDITIES and POSSIBLE "FUNNY BUSINESS"
Very happy to accept your opinion on this Jerry. There have also been fake first allocation BNs on eBay coming our of Sydney for a while as well. I think the stamps are fake too - possibly colour photocopies. I wonder if they are related.

John, Cant help very much but I have posted here a note to the Huon Times from Webster to place an Ad for the Geeveston-Hobart route 1912. Also from Walch's Almanac under the Hobart Listings, Coach and Omnibus services some details of timetables. Also under the individual listings by Municipality, t...

Re: FORGED POSTMARKS, ODDITIES and POSSIBLE "FUNNY BUSINESS"
Jerry, I have just seen the same lots. It would not surprise me at all to see a fiscal cancel with a BN indicating reuse of a duty stamp for postage but it does look very unusual in that there is such a large number of multiples of the 6d and 1/- values with good BN cancells. Heres another Ebay item...

Mt Balfour Type 2a -two types
Two Mt Balfour cds turned up on the back of cheques in my revenues collection. As they are good examples of the original and the altered cds, I thought some members might be interested to see the difference. The original showed the "MT" clearly but due to a name change to just Balfour, the "MT" was ...

Re: Help to identify First Allocation numerals
Thank you for the comments so far. Following Jerry's comments I have now made a comparison image with the BN in question, Left (A), a Second allocation BN19 centre (B), and the confirmed first allocation BN19(C) on the right. To me its now clear that both A and C are first allocation as the center e...

Re: Help to identify First Allocation numerals
John, thanks. Just so I am sure, 19A = Chudleigh (Second Allocation) and 19B = Pt Arthur? I am confused about the manuscript numerals. Jerry says N3 and N4 are No 36 ( but I need to switch the images 180Degrees) but you think N3 is 46 of New Town? I assume N3 and N4 are the same.. When you say 36, d...

Help to identify First Allocation numerals
If anyone can identify any of the following numerals I would be grateful.
There are two possible Numeral 19 (both lined numeral chalons so they might be second allocation), and 4 manuscript numerals.
You can use the ID numbers.

Hobart Cds 1 (i) (Hobart with nothing at base - the first type 1 for Hobart. This is a new LRD of 14 Sep 1880; the previous ERD was 2 Oct 1879. This is an interesting if unspectacular cds. Hardinge records only two copies seen, both code H. I have two further copies, one now the LRD. Both are back s...

Re: RAILWAY PARCEL CANCELS - POST YOURS HERE
A couple of interesting Railway Parcel Stamp cancells. The first two are "Cancelled / Launceston W. L." which stands for Wharf Line so John Hardinge tells me. As this is not a post office cancel it is not recorded in John Hardinge's recent book. I believe its quite scarce The other cancel is Parcels...

Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
I have posted a possible new Money Order and Savings Branch datestamp in the "Postmarks to 1912" section and cross refence it here as if new, it would be a new listing for Hardinge. It reads "M.O.O.&S.B Tasmania" MR 26 1897. Heres the link to the full post and images http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.p...

New Money Order Hobart Datestamp?
This seems to be an un-recorded datestamp from the Hobart Money Order and Savings Bank section from the 1890s. It reads "M.O.O. & S.B. Tasmania". The date is MR 26 1897 which makes it older than any of the other Money Order Branch datestamps in Hardinge. There is also a paid copy of the form dated 3...

Re: Tasmanian Postcards - Trout Fishing
Thanks Mike.
Very nice. I did actually come across a copy of the Pine Lake recently. The Beehives is another excellent fishing card whihc is new to me. The area looks much diffrent now with the level of the Great Lake much higher, except when we experienced the big drought a few years ago.
