King River or Ring River? - Question

I recently bough a Spurling RP card dated 30 10 1907 purporting to be of the Emu Bay Railway on the "Ring River Bridge ". To my surprise I already had an identical card titled "King River Bridge Emu Bay Railway" dated 2 No 1906 which I had never looked at closely. I don't believe the EBR actually cr...

Re: Hillend Tasmania

Hillend has always been a bit of a mystery to me. It was on the Emu Bay Railway (EBR) North of the junction to Williamsford etc and South of Renison Bell. A quick search of Trove reveals it was the site of a tunnel on the EBR and it seems quite likely (my best guess) the town was established as a ba...

Re: Macquarie River

Bill, the Salaries for Launceston average around £108 per month but this included messengers and clerks. There were no Town deliveries in Macquarie River as there were in Launceston. The offices are not necessarily directly comparable. For instance Macquarie River was not a Money Order office at the ...

Re: Macquarie River

A little more digging reveals that Macquarie River was around 6-7 miles to the north of Campbell Town. Bassett Hull, 1890 and Gazette notices give distances from Hobart as follows: Ross - 72 miles Campbell Town - 79 miles Macquarie River - 85 miles. I think the district was along the Macquarie River...

Re: Macquarie River

Bill, I may have mis-calculated the location of the Macquarie River PO by a few miles and will post a revised map and details. Its more likely North of Campbell Town but still on the River and some miles West of the current Main Road. There were two more or less parallel roads from the 1820s onwards,...

Re: Macquarie River

Ooops. Malcolm's correction about the numeral "4" handstamp is right. In the early PO listings we have Ross, Macquarie River, Lake River and Campbell Town with distances in miles between each one so it seems that they were seperate locations, even though Ross is right on the Macquarie River. The mil...

Re: Macquarie River

Bill, the Macquarie River is the main waterway flowing through the Northern Midlands of Tasmania and is a tributary of the South Esk. To be honest I am not sure of the exact location of the Post Office so named, but I believe it was on one of the early Land Grants to Mackersley(who was an early Post...

Here is a card in the Mt Lyell Tourist Association Series that has not been listed so far. The back records" The tall trees are myrtle. The girls are from Queenstown. The spot is near the King River, at Harris's Reward Mine" Can anyone suggest a more specific location of the mine and has this card b...

Re: Manuscript cancellation for ID please

The formal requirement for fiscal cancels was always simply day/month/year. These commenced 1 Oct 1863 ( can you date the stamp printing? If before then you can assume it’s some sort of postal endorsement.)

I have never seen “paid “ so I think it’s unlikely.
I can’t figure this one out at all.

Thanks Gareth. We will certainly be interested to hear about anything further you might discover. I gather King was something of a pioneer in aerial photography as mentioned. There are very few Tasmanian cards where the image was taken from the air. It would be interesting to know if you turn up any...

Re: H. J. King Postcards?

Gareth, The answer to your question is yes. King did produce postcards, was a keen motorcycle enthusiast and possible even an early aviation enthusiast. There are cards showing him and Stephen Spurling with their bikes. One series shows a trip to Cradle Mt at a time when road access was difficult. I...

Re: Tasmanian Ports

I think the only one you have missed is Port Leven which was re-named Ulverstone 1 Jan 1882 but as the datestamp was simply Leven I guess its a moot point if it fits the description of a "Port" datestamp. Port Latta and Port Davey did not have a PO or a datestamp. Datestamps from some of the post of...

Thanks Jerry, earliest barred obliterator I have is 4 Jan 1861, very early. Whilst we are on First allocation numerals, I have never seen the following on cover- 17,29, 30, 37, 65, 66. IN addition, I have never seen the following on cover either: : Leipzig, Tinder Box Bay, Eastern Marshes, Cambridg...

ERD - use of Hobart Obliterator. I have 23 Jan 1861 on a cover to UK, written up as the ERD, but obviously its not.
I just put it up for the record.

Richard, If its a mis-placed perfin then one wonders where the rest of it is. Most unlikely that it was upside down. I have no idea really but perhaps a second run of perforations which happened to stop half way across the stamp? I can't think of any satisfactory explanation but the "T" perfin theor...

Re: Fingal Railway Cancel

I agree - they are very elusive. Apart from Hobart, Launceston and Devonport, any other similar cancel seems to attract a lot of interest. Stations you would think were more common such as Wynyard or Stanly seem to be quite elusive as well.
