Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!

The photographer for these real photo postcards for the Tasmanian Tourist Bureau was Willian Fellows who marked many of his cards as "D.I.C. photo". As you know the DIC stands for Direct Import Company. Ross could you please scan the back so I can identify the type and list as I have not seen this c...

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!

Does anyone have any ideas where this rather unique hut is located? The walls appears to be made of heavy duty cast metal rivetted sheets. The postcard came from a family that had a connection to Circular Head area. They could not tell me any information. Could the metal sheets come from a shipwreck...

I took this photo of the Bothwell Post Office in about 1990. Not sure if I like the colour. What colour is it today?

Re: TASMANIAN POST OFFICES ON POSTCARDS.

These 5 superb photographs of Tasmanian Post Offices (not postcards) are on the National Archives of Australia face book page. I would think they are all c1910. The Kindred and Northdown POs are especially interesting and show how primitive these very small country Post Offices were. There are no ph...

Chipman's Series

I noticed on eBay the other week a rather nice card was sold with a rather good view of the West Coaster train crossing the Pieman River. I have not come across any cards from this series before. Can anyone add more cards to the series? Who was Chipman? The card has a Valentine back. I would date th...

Re: Tasmanian Postcards - Trout Fishing

Three real photo trout fishing cards, the first 2 were taken by Spurling. Both are postally used from Launceston to Melbourne on the 16/01/1906. The third card is by an unidentified photographer. The date is hard to read, but could be 1916. The writer mentions that the trout was a beauty and weighed...

Real Photo Postcard by F.S.Rodgers.

This great social history postcard was taken by little known photographer F.S.Rodgers. The 1913 Tas PO directory lists Rodgers as a grocer living at 263 Liverpool Street Hobart. The 1936 Tas PO Directory list Rodgers living at 89 Argyle Street Hobart with no occupation listed so perhaps now retired?...

This real photo postcard is the first I have seen by by J.A.Allen of 72 George Street, Launceston. Chris Long does list him with the same address but does not have any further information. The Tasmanian Post Office Directories for 1908 and 1909 lists Joe A Allen, Confectioner, at 72 George Street. I...

This real postcard of the Ski Club Hut, Twilight Tarn, Mt Field National Park was photographed by R. C Harvey. This card has a rather poor rubber stamped "Harvey Print". Re: STEPHEN SPURLING III - Interesting Real Photo cards, etc

It is still possible to come across little unrecognised treasures now and again. I found this real photo card by Stephen Spurling recently. The card is postmarked 22nd May 1905 and is addressed to Spurling's sister Stella ( full name Stella Nightingale Spurling) who was a school teacher at Low Head....

Hello John Found this photograph on page 89, in W.Geof Jay's book The Wild Westerners, published in 1988. Sorry about the poor quality of the scan. I think this could be the same cage as pictured in your postcards. The large rock looks similar to the one in your second postcard. I quote from the boo...

Hello John, I am afraid I cannot help you with any further information or other west coast cage cards. Re: King River or Ring River? - Question

The correct caption is "Ring River Bridge Emu Bay Railway". I know of other Spurling postcard with the wrong caption. This bridge was built by the Launceston firm, Salisbury & Co in 1900. They won the tender for the construction of the 285ft Ring River Bridge. The height above the river was 83ft. Th...
