Re: Forgeries and Facsimiles seen on Online Auction Sites, etc
The three Specimen forgeries posted on ebay by the Sydney forger (shown in the bulletin board post of 5 May 2022) were withdrawn by the forger and are now being reoffered individually on ebay under another of the forger's seller id's--this time "bottlejfb". I have reposted the images because they a...

Re: Strange cancel
Definitely unusual in Tasmania. Most offices only had one barred numeral canceller except for Hobart and Launceston so two different numeral cancels would not be possible in most Post Offices.

Re: Strange cancel
Both first allocation numerals were in use at the Launceston office at the time so presumably someone decided to use both or maybe more likely only one stamp was initially cancelled and the second numeral applied later. Can’t say I’ve seen anything like this before.

Re: Hi from Adelaide
Peter, in my somewhat limited experience, original datestamps only come on the market very rarely. The items on the TPS website were from a one-off find by a member of the public who knew what they were. Usually, old datestamps would be destroyed or re-used by the Postal Authority and circumstances ...

John, no back Creek CDS issued until about June 78 so its not 1867 as it might appear ( it would not have a frame if issued then in any case). Looks definitely dodgy to me. Could be an enhanced 1907 strike perhaps. I think I have seen this before ? As you know No 48 first went to Ouse in the Nov 185...

Thanks Rob, One of our members has been very actively involved in including with various Federal and State Govt authorities in having this guy's fake eBay ids cancelled. I believe information has been shared with the StampBoards team working on this. You will see various reports over time in this to...

John, its a fiscal (Revenue cancelling) handstamp from the Bank of Australasia. Used to cancel adhesive stamps on documents and Notes paying Stamp Duty. At the time it was applied, postage stamps could be used to pay Stamp Duty. The Bank was an important financial institution in Hobart from the 1850...

Re: BN cancels
Hi John, Identifying whats first and whats second allocation on these stamps can be tricky and you will often see BNs incorrectly identified in auctions and Ebay etc so best to always confirm. First Allocation was withdrawn in (Feb?) 1861. Ideally you have the cancel on a dated cover but obviously t...

Re: postmark
John, I really dont know what this is. However, as Eddystone Point was a closed Telegraph Office, not open to the Public, its unlikely to have cancelled any mail. According to Hardinge, as you no doubt know, it opened in 1889 at which time the stamps would have still been on issue. Hardinge gives th...

Thanks Jerry. It might be worthwhile listing the seller's name here so we can keep an eye out.
Some of us have reported various fakes to eBay over time, though with very little effect. Perhaps if there are multiple complaints there might be some action taken.

Re: postmark
The interstate use of Tas stamps is quite interesting as it was not legal for Australian Colonial stamps to be interchangeable until 1910,13 October. Any out-of-State stamp postmarked before 13 Oct 1910 was not strictly valid for postal use. This was because of the "Tattersall" factor and the contin...

Hi John
Not a Tasmanian postmark. It’s not unusual to see a Tas stamp cancelled elsewhere. Could be another State or New Zealand

Re: Cancellation on side face
I am not sure but as the stamp is circa 1880 which is also roughly when the "5" ms cancel of Black Brush is known, then it's possible. The first Barred numeral 5 was lost and later replaced.
A rare ms cancel if so.

Re: query on Date??
Looks like a case of a double strike to me. There is some doubling of the letters, greater at the top. In the process of making a second lighter but off-centre strike we get a second 6 in the year. So it's 1916 rather than 1966.

Dear David, As an Admin I can move your post but the problem there is no suitable category to move it to. Welcome, Ben. I've posted some information under our Postal History to 1912 category http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1399 . Collectors tend to collect the datetsamps from Post Offices on stamps or envelopes and these have been well recorded for Tasmania. Post Offices openings, closings and ...
