Re: 4d Courier Laid Paper

From Dec. 1916 London Philatelist (Vol. 25): "An item of unique philatelic interest will be offered for Sale by Auction at the Rooms of.Messrs. Puttick and Simpson, at 47 Leicester Square, in their sale of January 16th and 17th. It consists of an entire sheet of the Tasmania 1853, 4d.; red-orange, p...

Re: Walch's Tasmanian lettersheet

Using that essential reference, Subject Index and Bibliography for Tasmanian Philately (David McNamee, 2004 + updates), I see that Owen Ingles wrote a series of articles in PfA from SEP 1960 thru DEC 1961 on "Tasmanian Postal Stationery." He also wrote "A Precursor to the Pictorial Envelopes of Tasm...

Re: The D S & Co PERFIN (DODGSHUN & SONS) - Census & Discussion

The postmark appears to be Campbell Town, and Dodgshun did not have anything commercial in Campbell Town as far as I have been able to determine. Also, the ½d is an odd stamp to be used by them, since most of their communication would have been to Tas customers and suppliers or to the Melbourne head...

Re: inverted watermark on a chalon

Watermarked double-lined numerals are common inverted, about as common as normal. You may want to rread some of the standard references on these stamps if you have a continuing interest. Eugene Tinsley's Tasmania Stamps and Postal History is a good start.

Re: H 'AL' F PENNY Sideface Forgery?

I wrote an article on the forgeries of the Halfpenny overprint, both the forgery of the normal overprint and the error in The Informer, V65: 74-75 illustrating the ones I had at that time. Since then, I have collected several more of each normal and error. Attached here are some additional errors si...

http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt267/dwmtas/Nov30PoundPair.jpg David McNamee pair Bill Lloyd-Smith has done a lot of work in this area, and his work generally supports ONLY the 3d Platypus o/p REVENUE as being available on 30 November 1900 at the PO. Re: SECOND ALLOCATION BARRED NUMERALS - A LISTING

In Reference to John Hardinge's estimate of the Second Allocation "about Feb 1861," I think I can improve on that estimate. I have a manuscript Oyster Cove 2 MAR 1861 on pair (ex-Askeland), which was a Saturday -- one presumes that if a new handstamp was available, it would have been used. I have a ...

Re: A J Nettlefold Tailor & Outfitter

I have a copy of this label. A J Nettlefold was an alias for Tatts in Hobart and an agent in Queenstown, and one of these labels is found on Tatts mail. A J Nettlefold is known as part of the Tatts network 1904-1907.

Re: RATED POSTMARKS on PICTORIALS - IS THERE A CUTOFF DATE?

As with any collection, what you choose to collect is what you choose to collect. When I collected Pictorial postmarks, I set my personal cut-off at 31-3-1913. A bit arbitrary, but that is the collector's prerogative. It is another question whether a person selling a stamp has described it properly ...

My 3 are counted in the above. On a 1d and the 2d, the last digit of the year appears to be 1897.

Here from my notes is an auction cat listing Robson Lowe 19 DEC 1978: "1827 Hobart Town Courier newspaper with fine NEWS PAPER DUTY/ VAN DIEMENS LAND/ Crown/ TWO PENCE Stamp Duty imprint in black." Unfortunately, I cannot lay my hands on the catalogue at the moment.

Introducing David McNamee

I am one of the TPS Members from the United States. I live in California, so I travel to Australia a bit less frequently now that I am retired, but reasonably often enough to stay in touch with many TPS members in Tassie and the Mainland. My collecting interests are nearly all centered on Tasmania -...

Post Office Operations 1900-1912

I find village postmarks dated every day of the year, including Sundays, Christmas Day, New Years Day. Did postal employees work every day? Was the post office open for business every day?

Re: Doubled OS Perfins on Pictorials and QV Tablets

I have three singles and one pair of the Pictorial ½d with doubled "OS" perfins from 0.5mm, 1.5mm, 5mm and 15mm offsets, all unused. I have seen a doubled 1d used and a doubled 4d unused, but I do not own them.
