Re: Tasmanian Raiway Station Franking Stamps.

Dave, these CDS were used on the Travelling Post Office on the main line between Hobart and Launceston, not at a specific station. TML 1, 2 and 3 were allocated to a specific mail van. These CDS were introduced 1886 and were engraved TML Railway as that was the name of the company operating the line...

Re: BN 60

JOhn, this is the first allocation issue of 60 from Launceston. The same BN was reissued to 1883, likely to St Leonards or Wyniford River, however, this is found on sidefaces, not chalons. The second allocation original 60 is quite different and nowhere bear as worn.

Re: postmark

Sorry you are quite correct. Is not 1. It's quite a fat number for an imperf Chalon so is likely either a partial 11, 71 or 81.

That 5d pictorial is a very late date John. Great item. There are some interesting CDS from Hobart on the 5d.

Re: postmark

Highly likely it is a fiscal cancel. Many were just cancelled with the initials or name of the person concerned at the time.

Re: postmark

This is an interesting one. Almost certainly some sort of local "relief" canceller. Impossible to know where it was used, unfortunately. A few different ones like this exist.

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!

The 6 is large type but none the less a type manufactured later than the others. It's likely that the original CDS probably did not go beyond 1950 and new year type were manufactured for the CDS then, just ever so slightly smaller than the previous ones. Same thing happened at a few offices, Gould C...

Re: First Allocation 38 - Numeral and Ms on a pair

The First allocation numerals were made from very poorly face hardened steel and hence many of them impressed very poorly indeed. Whilst I have not seen any exactly like this I have seen poor strikes manuscripted over with the number before. It's another reason why so many first allocation manuscrip...

Re: FORGED POSTMARKS, ODDITIES and POSSIBLE "FUNNY BUSINESS"

the 85 is the most convincing but all are fakes. The top bar of the 59 is more sloped than the original. 60 the spacing between the bars is greater etc.

Re: Help to identify First Allocation numerals

Sorry Peter it doesn't> C is first allocation, quite distinctive. A is definitely second. I think the letter shape is different but the best bet is to measure the distance between the 1 and (. They are much closer on the first allocation. From the far edge of the 1 to the far edge of the 9 is 24 mm ...

Re: Help to identify First Allocation numerals

Correct a is 2nd allocation, B is first. Yes N3 and N4 are 36, but so is N1 I think you will find. The other N2 is 41 of Lake River. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Help to identify First Allocation numerals

Peter, the first two on the 1d's are second allocation 19 of Chudleigh and first allocation 19 of Port Arthur respectively.

Jerry is correct re 36. N2 is 41 of Lake River. Classic sloping 4 and ambiguous looking 1. N3 is 46 of New Town. Characteristic 4 that looks like a Y.

I fear I have not described the CDS very well and have missed off the second "o". This is the same CDS as I intended to describe sorry. Needless to say it is really rare.

Re: Multiple BN for Hobart

To try and give a timeline, the original issue of First Allocation numerals was made on 1.1.1.1853, the same day that the stamps they were meant to obliterate were issued. 66 numeral were reserved for 62 office, it always being intended that two numerals be issued to Launceston and four to Hobart. You can also add the following closures:

Branxholm 8/9/14
Hillwood 31/5/16
Taroona 30/6/17

Numbers are going down all the time.

Re: help needed

I have never seen this one either Niel. Does the stamp have a fiscal cancel underneath that has been bleached out. IF so, it's probably not a postal marking but something made by a collector to hide the cleaning of the 6d, which is much more commonly fiscally used.

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !

Hi, this is the Type 1c(ii). You can tell by the oval "o" of Hobart, the other four CDS have a round "O". IN 1910-11 at the end of it's life it appears without a code and without a yer, like this example.
