Re: postmasters

Laurent, Firstly you should get Volume II of the Green Books. Not the most up to date but it obtains a lot of new information compared to Volume I Trove is the online archive for the National library of Australia where you can search most newspapers published in Australia from the early period. You ...

Re: postmasters

Laurent,

A you probably have seen volume II of the Green Books lists postmasters and postmistresses from 1899 to 1912.

For the period you are looking at I think it is a case of painstaking searching on Trove

Re: Rate to Australia in 1856

I have posted another 4d rate intercolonial cover from 1856 from a recent US auction. To the best of my knowledge there was no 6d rate for intercolonial mail (confirmed in discussion with other 'old hands') which leaves a question about the cover posted by RK. Because the 2d is tied I wonder if the ...

Not the same card but comparable T perfins which David McNamee considered dodgy. number of holes and positioning may give a clue for the card Allen illustrates

Re: DOUBLE CIRCULAR POSTMARK ON 2 chalon

It is possibly the C-TOWN double arc date stamp which was introduced in 1862 so would fit with the 2d Chalon numeral wmk.. The stamp would normally have been obliterated with the 2nd allocation '16' of Campbell Town but unusually this may have been cancelled with the date stamp. You would need to me...

Cards by E.M. White, Queenstown

I am seeking information about post cards sold by E.M. White, Queenstown used around 1909. I doubt they are particularly scarce but the card I have is written by E.M. White to a Miss F. White in New Town. Also bears a mis-perforated 1d with knife cut repair which is what interested me initially. Sce...

My 'best guess' is is on the eastern shore of the Derwent looking south towards Mount Direction somewhere near Bridgewater of today. Probably on the banks of the Jordan where it joins the Derwent River. A popular trout fishing area around those times

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!

Both scenes look very much like Lindisfarne Regatta on the jetty looking up towards the original Queen Victoria Home. The QVH had a large paddock in front of it running down towards the bay with pine trees around the perimeter. The hills in the background look right and the street at left is still t...

It is certainly from the lithographed printings on V over Crown paper wmk sideways left. The DLR printings are much deeper purple in colour and none were produced on paper other than wmk TAS. The proofs were on unwatermarked paper and the imperforate sheets were on TAS wmk paper I have seen a number...

Re: manuscript postmark identification

Laurent,

Peter is correct. I have never seen a manuscript cancellation related to Hobart. With several obliterators on hand I doubt if there ever was a situation where they were all out of action. I have seen mss '52' of Launceston in the Second allocate period but nothing for Hobart.

Found a full example of the Form posted by Daryl which dates at least up to 1970 and relates to the stocktake carried out when a transfer of PM takes place. Hopefully this throws some more light on the crown seals pieces.

I have also been inspired to dig out my old files on the letter cards and found the census conducted by Gene Tinsley in 1990 and published in P from A in March 1991. I have included a copy of the article and will post further comments later once I have condensed my notes into something sensible. The...

Re: TASMANIAN CROWN SEALS - a survey

Further thoughts - these forms probably relate to those completed by PO Inspectors who took an inventory of the assets and hand stamps held by the Postmaster on a regular basis. This seems to fit with the types of equipment in the partial form in an earlier post e.g. 21 Pig eon holes 22 Priv ate box...

Re: TASMANIAN CROWN SEALS - a survey

Daryl,

Would you be able to scan a complete form and post it?

I believe they were some sort of monthly (?) register the PM had to maintain recording all the implements he held. They also maintained a daily record of their date stamp showing that they had used the correct date.

Re: 1900/12 - 2d Pictorial Lettercards - discuss them here!

The extensive article by Geoff Kellow in Sydney Views of February 2011 provides a great deal of new Archival information. It demonstrates, amongst other things, that the Hobart printings were in fact printed in Melbourne. It provides information that was not available to Owen Ingles when he wrote th...
