4d Couriers and Chalons in large blocks with BN1 '58' cancels

The Koichi Sato Grand Prix d’Honneur Collection of Tasmania was sold by David Feldman in Geneva on 27 June 2014. It included many of the finest known mint and used Couriers and Chalons, some wonderful covers and some large used blocks of 4d Couriers and 4d Chalons. The catalogue and prices realised ...

Re: USE OF THE 1d THIN PAPER ISSUE (SG 261 and 261a)

Thanks John. I'll keep adding to my statistical analysis as new data or specimens come to hand. Malcolm Groom has given me some excellent information about printings and delivery dates, and has given me a list of the 1d thin paper specimens he has at the moment. He has one specimen dated 28 December...

Re: LATEST 1913 POSTMARKS on 1d PICTORIAL ISSUES - A SURVEY

I have been working though my collection of 1d thin paper stamps, looking for cancellations with latest complete dates. There are 140 offices in the list below. A large proportion have not yet appeared under this heading, so there are many more late dates to be added. Some dates (all in 1913) are ea...

USE OF THE 1d THIN PAPER ISSUE (SG 261 and 261a)

Stimulated by John Hardinge's view that a 1912 cut-off date for cds postmarks on pictorial issues took no account of necessarily extended pictorial use before arrival of Commonwealth issues in Tasmania, I have been building a collection of used 1d thin paper stamps. The issue is easy to distinguish ...

Hobart Parcels

Avery and Hardinge list various oval parcel cancellations that were used during the Commonwealth period. Two examples of the 'Oval (i)' type in blue appeared in the Prestige Philately Auction 171 on 17 February 2012, as lots 394 and 396. Illustrations are attached. Hobart,parcel,27-Jun-27.jpg Hobart...

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!

Can anyone help with this strike? I thought it would be a common (probably) parcel postmark on an attractive pair of SG 212, and bought it as such, but I can't find it in Part 2 of "Cancellations 1913-88" by Avery and Hardinge.

Re: The Hobart Time Ball: request for a picture

Hello Kerry, Thanks for that one too. A similar (but framed) print is on display in "Lenna", now a hotel at Battery Point in Hobart, with the title "Lenna 1908 showing Signal Station mast with Black Basket at the Cross Trees position". I've included a magnification of part of it in my JAH2 paper, wh...

Hello Kerry, I've not seen that postcard before, so many thanks for posting it. Do you know when the photograph was taken? The latest photograph found so far was taken in January 1924 (from identication of a Japanese warship in Hobart). The time ball was removed in February 1927. There seem to have ...

Re: The Hobart Time Ball: request for a picture

The paper has been a long time in gestation. With help from Ross Ewington, tps members and many other friends, the story has at last come together and will be published soon in the Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage. Thanks to all - it's turned out to be a fascinating story! The following ...

The following example is missing the day in February 1913, but is otherwise a good, clear strike of Wynyard, Type 3 with the late time of 11.30 pm. The stamp is SG 261, thin paper. Bought on Ebay in August 2010 for AU$5.

Re: CORRECT IDENTIFICATION of BARRED NUMERAL POSTMARKS

Thanks, David. That's helpful. I noted the description of the '1' in the first Green Book, but wasn't quite sure whether this applied to all the first allocation cancels containing a '1'. The Green Book description of the first allocation '5' as having a down stroke with a distinct slope from right ...

Re: CORRECT IDENTIFICATION of BARRED NUMERAL POSTMARKS

I am struggling with the BN51 cancels. I came across a strip of three 1d Chalons (Watermark '1') with BN51 cancels in a collection. The '1' has short serifs with rounded entry at the top and bottom, which makes it look diffent to the '1' in either of the second allocation BN51s used at Latrobe, whic...

LAUNCESTON, JA 27 05 This is the first exampe I have seen of an unframed Launceston cds. Is it the Type 1 cds, noted on Pages 93 and 94 of the Green Book Part I and Page 73 of Part II, which seems to be very scarce? Are many examples known? Confirmation would be greatly appreciated. Most, but not all, of the 1d are thin paper. 1d value APSLEY 21 JAN 13 BAGDAD (pair) 17 FEB 13 CHUDLEIGH (strip of 3) 28 JAN 13 DULV...

BRIDGEWATER I bought the illustrated item on Ebay from a US supplier. Manuscript,B-.jpg The 4d Chalon appears to have a part manuscript cancellation of BRIDGEWATER. Can anyone help me with this Type 1 cancel? There's not much to go on, so it's something of a challenge. The stamp is a 1d thin paper and the postmark date is 11 February 1913. The '11' is in manuscript black ink. There is a clear circle stop between the T of TASMANIA and the S. The circle stop appe...

Re: The Hobart Time Ball: request for a picture

Pete. I must have misinterpreted the Walch's Alamanac description. I should have realised that the card had to be later than 1900. Thanks for clarifying that. It was hardly likely to have used an old image! I saw a picture at "Narryna" when I visited the Museum on 1 June 2010, which shows the time b...

Re: The Hobart Time Ball: request for a picture

Pete. Many thanks for those. it strikes me that the ball was smaller than most. 1.5 metres was the preferred diameter (Sydney, Newcastle, Semaphore and Lyttelton, for example), but the Hobart ball looks to be barely half that. Walch's Tasmanian Almanacs between 1876 and 1927 include a short descript...
