Re: Hobart boxed AR marking 1896

There is one registered letter reported from Hobart, Tasmania dated 20 August 1914 bearing a pale blue handstamp of a double-lined box 28mm square enclosing “HOBART/ TASMANIA/ A.R./ No……….” with the “A.R.” dominating most of the box. This was reported by Neil Russell in the Autum 1989 issue of The A...

Re: FREE LOCAL MAIL !!

I have a registered envelope addressed from the Woodsdale postmaster to the Hobart Money Order Office with a great originating c.d.s. but no receiving mark and no postage. My guess is that both your item and mine were used as items of convenience to communicate post office business (or close to offi...

Re: Bisected stamps

Thanks, Patrick. Did not know there was another example around. Note the captal "M" has the same distinctive beginning loop -- I would say that the writer of both of these items bearing bisects was the same person. Patrick says the person was the Postmaster. Odd that the PO was out of ½d stamps Augu...

Re: Bisected stamps

The collector who owns the bisected cover graciously provided a scan. My memory was faulty -- it is a bicected 1d used with a 2d for the foreign letter rate 1906. Backstamped Launceston 29 August; Vancouver, BC; New York; and West Hoboken, NJ 6 October.

This could also be a docketing datestamp used on receiving mail. There are traces of a barred cancel underneath. Some of the same questions could be raised about Board of Education, illustrated here, except that there is no trace of other cancellation.

Re: 10d QV SIDEFACE FISCALLY USED - SEEN ANY?

I actually have one on document -- probably a rare bird. Promissory note dated 2 January 1885 for £250. The 10d SF paid one-third the total 2/6 duty owed on this Second of three duplicates (6d per £50 = 30d, divided by 3 = 10d). Issued by Mt. Bischoff Tin Mining Co. Document folded for convenience. ...

Re: MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS- ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE !

Generally penstrokes on stamps cannot be attributed to a particular office unless the "hand" is so distinctive. Noted in these "H" pattrerns (or crosshatch) that there are 2 and possible 3 different hands. The first two and last look similar to a piece I have from Macquarie Plains (ex-Askeland), but...

Jim Lessig and SAS/O published a monograph of Australian Commonwealth slogan postmarks 1918-1960 in 1974. Likely a lot of overlap with Magpie publications.

Handstamps and their Manufacturers

What does anyone know about the manufacture and distribution of Tasmanian handstamps after the locally produced first barred numeral obliterators of 1853? I am keen to know about the straight-line REGISTERED handstamp (ERD 1856) used at Hobart and Launceston and later Zeehan. Identical REGISTERED ha...

I have a poorly done fake reversed "OS" on 3d Pictorial canceled in Sydney. Date is 1903 (too early), and it is supposed to be one of the rare "Commonwealth" types, but the holes do not match any known "OS" pattern.
