Did Post Offices sell Beer Duty Stamps?

#1 Post by admin » Sat Aug 23, 2014 6:40 pm

I noticed on a series of Post Office forms from Woodsdale around the period March 1913 that there is a space to record the value of Beer Duty stamps on hand.
While nothing is recorded for Woodsdale, hardly surprising considering its small size and lack of a pub as far as I know, I did not think Post Offices sold Beer Duty stamps?
Perhaps they did so on behalf of the State Treasury.
This is posted more for information than anything else but if anyone has more knowledge of this any information would be appreciated.
The forms are interesting in that they show what a wide range of business even a small country Post Office performed at that time including old age pension payments, savings bank business, Money orders, postal notes and receipt of various cash payments as well as stamps.

Pete
As far as I'm aware all post offices sold Commonwealth Beer Duty Stamps.

Certainly from about 1903, yes. Not sure about under the state administration.
