Stamp Duty Hand Stamps

This brass hand stamp was noted in a Hobart antique sale run by Gowans Auctions amongst a number of other official brass hand stamps. No others had any philatelic significance.

Are any further details about this handstamp available?
Perhaps information on its size and the dimensions of
the coat of arms, for instance?

All I know is that it was lot 41 in the Gowans Antique sale and realised $350. Did not view it as I discovered it after the sale was over.

Thanks for the link. The auction was held last Saturday (20 June 2015).
Is it worth asking them for details or has it already been taken away by
the buyer? This stamp may be one of the very types recorded by AFBH
in his book of 1890.

this handstamp was responsible for Craig Type 7.500 and is illustrated in his catalog on page 14 as 'ID1"

Did you check the handstamp when the auction was held?

I had informed Malcolm previously that it might be the very
same Craig type that I had speculated on.

No .....unfortunately, the existence of the handstamp was unknown to me until Malcolm made his post. If I'd known I would have been at the auction with my hand in the air!

What a great item and good to see it has survived.

Would be nice to know provenance as this really belongs in the Post Office or Treasury similar museum.

Amazing how all these got out into public hands as they would be Government property unless it was the Government who sold them off.
