Beer Duty Stamps update to July Courier 2009

#1 Post by Revenuer » Tue Jun 30, 2009 4:56 am

Beer Duty Stamps of Tasmania has now been published in the July 2009 edition of the Courier.

1. I would like to add some missed information.

2. As Tasmania was the very first Australian State to issue beer duty stamps it is important to list the earliest recorded date.

The date shown in the listing is from my exhibit of Tasmania beer duty stamps 5/3/1880 this has to be changed to 4/3/1880 it may only be one day but this new date is now just 4 days after the issued date of 1/3/1880, lets hope somebody reading this will have an even earlier date.

More to follow

3. Page 10 1880 issue, some 2/3d remainders were reissued in 1901.

4. Page 12 we need to tick every box in the Mint column including the 13/6d Grey which is perfed on 3 sides.

5. Page 13 we need to tick the locally printed 3/- firkin & 6/- Kilderkin as used. Not sure where De La Rue comes into this. The 3/- was reissued in 1901 with a provisional manuscript 2/3 in black. Tick this as used BUT there is no box to tick it is just added as a foot note on page 15 you may have to manually write this one in.

Above reported to authors Nov08-April09.

Had an email from one of the authors, Dingle Smith who informs me “….`new finds’/ rarer items we have based these on seeing copies, scans etc”.

So to understand all this, the items I am listing in this thread are what I have personally seen and made notes and reported to the authors. Unfortunately they have not physically seen them and choose not to list them.

6. Page 12 EKD’s; 3s on 2/3d 11/9/92. 6s on 4/6d 28/12/92. 12s on 9/- 6/12/93. Add a tick to 9s on 6/9d mint.

7. Page 14 EKD; 1900 6/- 3/7/1900.

8. Page 15 two fonts of the 2 in 2/6 have been seen by me in various positions within the same stamp the font layout [1, 2, 3, 4] of the stamp pictured on page 15

9. Also seen reversed whereby there is 3 of the 2 font from position 4 and 1 of the 2 font in positions 1, 2, 3.

10. Also seen the same font layout but with all 4 ‘/’ in 2/6.

11. Also seen font’s 1, 2 ,3 in all 4 positions.

12. Also seen the missing ‘/’ in 2/6 in the same position [3] but perfed on 3 sides, either telling us this appeared more than once on a sheet or in this case the top margin was line perfed which I suspect was not the case.

13. Page 16 Some full sheets are known in private hands of the lower values.

14. Back to page 15. Add 1/6d keg in blue [as stated in footnote]

15. Also page 15 needs to be divided into early and later printings by font layout to container size and value. See pic for TENPENCE. & TEN PENCE

16. Page 14 shows the Leski 9/- [top copy] I also have this in different fonts.

In the lower copy shown here the '9' & the '/ ' differs the '-' is not central.

In the lower copy HALF HOGSHEAD and NINE SHILLINGS is thicker.

I feel these are different printings rather than from the same sheet as they are different colours/shades.

Any thoughts from the balcony?

Late thoughts & queries;

On page 22 at the top a 3/- on 1/6d is listed presumably on a BMH? if so, i cannot find the 1/6d BMH listed elsewhere, it must exist for it to have been overprinted in the first place.

On page 23 the 8/- handstamped NEI must have been first issued as 4/8d BMH overprinted NEI prior to the provisional 8/- handstamp. If this is from the 1917 issue at the top of page 23 were all values 1/2 - 70/- BMH issues overprinted NEI's?

Thought I would bump this up the page.

All listed beers by me above except the BW Grey as it's in a UK collection, will be on view at the Canberra show in March. Hope you can make it there.

Of interest the BW imprint on the beers includes '&c' an abbreviation for 'etc' I had not picked up on this before.

Don't think the 12/6d has been added to the census.
