Dragon - 10/- Harris Perfs & More

#1 Post by Revenuer » Wed Feb 03, 2010 6:19 pm

After chatting with Bill Lloyd Smith at length over the Harris perfs and survival of same on Dragons, it would appear the 10/- is exceedingly rare. Attached are the only two i have. If you have one or more can you please show them here thank you.

At present I am working on my revamping my 5 frame Tasmania Revenue exhibit for Canberra10 and am looking for notes on your EKD’s as I do not want to list an EKD [to my knowledge] when, say Pat has something a week earlier. Francis has his on line so no problems there.

Pat if you are reading this can you please have a dig out of your 1863-1870 Dragon perfs and let me know you’re EKD and anybody else reading this I would be most grateful for your assistance in this project.

Dave

Interestingly for such a scarce stamp the above dates are 5 years apart...Dave

Hi Dave

I assume the above are Perf 12.5

Harris started perforating in 1864 and stopped in 1869 due to Walch getting the Govt. contract. There will then of course be late uses of existing stocks. Therefore the date range of 1864-70 is exactly what we would expect to see.

Dave, I agree that the 10/- Harris perf is scarce. It is appreciably scarcer than the Walch perfs as the Walch business was larger covering both Hobart and Launceston.

It is however conjecture about how many were perforated with a particular gauge as the records do not exist. The Harris perf is found used over 6 years from 1865-1870 and probably exists from 1864. The 1864 10/- on document, whether imperf or any perf, would be quite tough I imagine.

As to "where are they all?", the answer is "in mixed lots" as these issues tend not to be offered separately unless it's a huge multiple. And, believe it or not, there aren't a lot of specialists in this area.
