TOURIST PROMOTION LABELS - "Come to Tasmania", etc

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Wed Sep 23, 2009 3:29 pm

I was just sorting through some "rather ordinary" first flight covers from the 1930s and flipped
one over to find this attractive label which I have never seen before.

Does anyone have any information about the "Launceston 50,000 League"?? A Google search reveals
little except some representatives of the League visited Lilydale in 1932 and they lodged a complaint
about greyhounds at some time, probably in 1949!!

TOUR TASMANIA ON A TENNER - BEGIN AT BURNIE
This label probably dates from the late 1920s through
to the mid 1930s.

Does anybody know when the "Tour Tasmania (or Tassie) on a Tenner" Tourist Bureau
promotion was current? You can find pre-WWII era Tourist Bureau envelopes with the slogan thereupon.

This description came with the Poster stamp:

A long running campaign of the Tasmanian Government Tourist Bureau, late 1930s per consignor.

Likely commissioned by Evelyn Temple Emmett, bushwalker, writer and Tasmania Tourism Director in 1914-1941, who had coined the slogan.

I have seen recently, a plain envelope FDC for the 9d Platypus issued on -1SE38 which confirms a late 1930s usage as per Dave's post above.

...and now for something completely different - a "Car Sticker" c.1960 still in it's original cellophane packaging.

I have a number of promotional envelopes that I will dig out and post images. I have the sticker shown above in two different sizes. Dealer Willard Allman has in stock a wonderful Tas Tourist Board envelope, but its price is beyond my means. I have a similar but much scruffier example somewhere that I will also dig out.

Watch this space!
