Australian Archives Office Hobart to Close

Hi all

The National archives office in Hobart will close in a couple of years time.

I got this information from Martin Walker yesterday. See link

http://www.naa.gov.au/about-us/director ... index.aspx

Researchers in Tasmanian stamps will be affected since there is some information
relating to postage and revenue stamps of Tasmania in the archives.

For now, it's important to have a look in the Australian Archives in Hobart before
they move out of the Apple Island. Researchers and fellow philatelists, there is
not as much time as you might think.

There is the consolation that the records will still continue to exist but they may be
harder to get at or be put in a less convenient location. Some years ago, many
Commonwealth Treasury records were officially destroyed. Some of them were
directly relevant to stamp production for Australia, including the early Federal
period. Some of it was relevant to Tasmania. This is an irretrievable loss.

Max Hooper of Sydney has written about this some years ago. Now let's get on
with our researches into Philatelica Tasmaniana. There are probalby still a few
goodies to be located in the Australian Archives!
