While seeking answer for a question asked in the POSTCARD category, I found this item printed
in the Hobart Mercury the day the present building housing the Hobart GPO was finally opened
for business (Monday September 4th 1905 although it does appear to read that the post office was
operating on the evening of Saturday, September 2nd !!??!!).

If you have any photos of any of the HOBART GPO's and any information to share, please post in this thread.

Hi Ross.

The card illustrated is clearly postmarked 27 August 1904 so the image must be prior to opening although there are no signs of builders.

I have anothercoloured card showing the same view but slightly closer. This one is mint so no clues about date etc. Publshed by McVilly & Little, Hobart, Tasmania and printed in Germany. Shows the number 99266 at bottom right on address side. I will copy and post this if you wish.

While seeking contemporary views about the issue of the Pictorial stamps I1d & 2d values) in 1899 I came
across this report in The Mercury regarding the competition to obtain a design for the Hobart GPO.

If you can find some other reports about this competition, please post them in this topic.
