This is a paperback by Laurie Hoare published by the author in 1998.

I quote from the frontispiece - ABOUT THIS BOOK.

"The book is a directory of Tasmanian towns a century ago. Look up just about any town and , depending on its size and character, you can find out where it was, what the people did, who the notable citizens were, what were the main buildings and how the town began. But 'Towns' is more than that. It also tells of the life of the townspeople and the settlers both great and small through reports and anecdotes recorded by the journalists of the day. There were adventures and achievements, hardships and disasters. Through the stories of 230 towns and some hundreds of named citizens we can learn something of what went into making Tasmania and its people what they are today. Along the way you will encounter plenty of oddities from the 'good old days.' such as the 'Samsons' that were used to clear the forests and the wonder expressed at the luxurious hotels that offered their guests the latest comfort in fresh water baths."

397 pages and the index includes individual names as mentioned in the text. A mine of information.
