An example of the top value postal note used in the year they were introduced. Fine example of the M.O & S.B. Launceston date stamp.

This postal note is illustrated on Dave Elsmore's website.
The watermark is described as double lined 2. Note that
some remaining sheets of the old Chalon paper were used
up for packing, mostly with '4' but a few with '2'.

[Oh, yes, the figure '2' is visible. Have a close look. It's
inverted. Thanks to Ross for pointing this out.]

It may be that most of the postal notes from the 1890s
era were on these two types of paper since efforts had
been made to use up the '1' paper (George and Dragon,
for instance). Besides, stocks of '6' and '12' paper were
not as large.

No records detailing how much of this paper appear to be
available as far as I know. Perhaps someone can throw
more light?

...and another one issued at Stanley in 1916. Woeful condition unfortunately.

Martin Walker of Adelaide has very kindly sent me a photo of a Tasmanian
postal note from the National Archives of Australia in North Melbourne.
The note is from NAA file
NAA:MP341/1, 1938/12544, Postal Notes - Uniform Butt or Counterfoil 1906-1938
It is part of his ongoing research into postal notes of South Australia. As the story
after 1902 is similar for all States it is worth collecting the details for postal notes
of the other States as a byproduct of his researches.

It's time to ask if any other Tasmanian postal notes have come to light,
especially the earlier issues. Would any of you folks have images of any
examples of postal notes issued before, say 1912, apart from the couple
of examples illustrated on this BB? Also, any official announcements are
also welcome.

The very first notes could only be paid in the mainland Colonies if an
extra poundage fee was paid but that rule was gradually relaxed as
Federation approached. Any details, please?

The 1890 cashed Tasmania Postal Note is very like one I have, so much so I think it may be the same one. What is peculiar is that there is no serial number. I also have a later one with serial number, I can send a scan.

A 1/- Tasmanian Postal Note issued at the Hobart GPO in 1930 - strange that it wasn't cashed in during The Depression!

Richard Solly (see post above) has kindly forwarded this image of his 1sh Postal Note issued in 1895 at St Helens.

The Commonwealth 1/- one above the last is rare note Ross and nice to see. This issue was short lived and soon taken out of service for having the incorrect Coat of Arms

The postal note illustrated by Richard Solly is clearly watermarked
double lined '4'. It seems worthwhile to point this out as this is in
contrast to the 20/- note on double lined '2' paper.

It is very difficult to see the watermarks (if any) on the other notes
illustrated in this section.

Here's another example of the 1890 20/- Tasmanian Postal Note - note that the signing payee is the same person and that
the postal note was cancelled at Launceston on the same day. (see above http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=389#p1670 )
