Wurrawa T.O.

#1 Post by Jeffharris » Sat Aug 20, 2011 3:25 pm

The Wurrawa T.O. opened on 8th. July 1925 and closed on 31st. December 1941. It was located about 25km. N.N.W. of St. Helens in a secluded area. All that was located there was a sawmill. In 1925, a wooden tramway was built from the mill to the coast some 22km. away [at Sloop Rock Cove]. A jetty was built to enable ketches to be loaded with timber carried from the mill on the tramway trucks. A telephone line was erected which went from the mill to the jetty, as well as another line which connected with Ansons Bay and St. Helens.

The nearest telegraph line was much further to the west, as it went from St. Helens to Moorina etc. via Goshen, Gould's Country and Lottah. Wurrawa was only a Telephone Office. Is there any other information available about this office. I would be grateful if other members could provide some details.

P.S. The tramline was used only once, as the jetty was exposed to the large south-easterly swells which are common along that section of the coast.
