SPECIMEN Printing/Issue Quantities

#1 Post by Jerry Weirich » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:40 am

I'm looking for information on how many SPECIMEN overprinted stamps were produced on the 1/2d litho, 1d electro, and 2d litho pictorials. It appears to be less than the SPECIMEN overprints on the recess-printed pictorials based on how often I see them come onto the market but I also can't find any information on those quantities. Appreciate any information. Thanks, Jerry

Tinsley at page 183 states ".....five specimens were distributed under UPU Circular No 3456/1867 dated 24 August 1904"

Bendon's 'UPU Specimen Stamps' at page 225 states that from 9 July 1902 to 8 October 1904, the number of stamps required by the UPU was 721.

The requirement at the time of the TAS wmk specimens was 726, which does nothing to explain the relative scarcity of the litho specimens.
