inverted watermark on a chalon

#1 Post by Kastas » Wed Mar 31, 2010 7:01 am

hello, i ve found this stamp in a pack of Chalon. It looks like the 65 in SGcatalog (australia) but the watermark is inverted (6 is like a 9).
Have you ever seen that before? Forgery or unreferenced stamp despite known?

There is no trace of hinge on the back. Does it mean it is a forgery? Are the Chalon often found with watermark inverted? (if it's the case, it explains that there is no cotation in the catalog for it) Do you see fine forgeries of Chalon from time to time? Many questions and ...answers?

Watermarked double-lined numerals are common inverted, about as common as normal. You may want to rread some of the standard references on these stamps if you have a continuing interest. Eugene Tinsley's Tasmania Stamps and Postal History is a good start.
