Chalon Inverted Watermarks

#1 Post by Jerry Weirich » Mon Jun 06, 2011 7:18 am

I have the opportunity to acquire an unused, no gum, four margined, pair of 1d Chalons with inverted double-lined watermark 1. The price has a substantial extra premium because of the inverted watermark. Can anyone tell me if the inverted watermarks are scarcer than the normal upright watermarks on the Chalons? My sense is that they do not, like most of the pictorials, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

Very scarce but not very rare is my observation re Chalons with inverted watermarks.

Tinsley states on Page 27 "In the first printings in 1857, all three values were printed with watermark inverted. Some printings
in 1858 and 1859 were also inverted, and some inverted and reversed items are known. Only an occasional inverted watermark (including
Sixpence and One Shilling) is encountered from the subsequent printings, though one suspects that intensive searching today would
turn up more copies
."
