Perkins Bacon 4d Chalon h/s CANCELLED for auction

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:29 pm

Just noticed this Tasmanian "classic" to be offered for sale by a Sydney-based auction house
on August 30th. A good opportunity to record an image here.

THanks Ross. Its such a great example it might be worth a short Courier article next year. Do you know if there is any documentation abut this Specimen Chalon ?

This is a very famous stamp - there were 6 produced and only three are in private collections.
These stamps are known as the "Ormond Hill" specimens, the production of which in 1861
apparently led to Perkins Bacon & Co. losing their printing contracts to De La Rue. (see Tinsley page 24)

This is the ex Peter Jaffe stamp.

Thanks Ross. If its written up in Tinsley then its probably not a suitable Courier article, although the Price REalised might be of interest.

Peter Jaffe also wrote a book describing this and the other "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon" stamps. Price Realised will be sufficient to buy a small car.
