Identifying Litho and Typo on 1d Pictorials

#1 Post by wilbaer » Wed Jul 03, 2013 11:22 am

I hope somebody may be able to help. It sounds so stupid but having read through gibbons and Robson Lowe, I still have troubles with getting these two types correctly identified for the 1D when it comes to checking the stamps themselves.(the other denominations are straightforward in comparison). Does anybody know of a link or a website which has clearly-defined examples that I can reference?
I am doing a study on TAS government perfins and want to make sure in my illustrations that I am getting things right!

By way of example, I am trying to ascertain if my P12½ V over Crown 1d's are all SG240 and 241 (typo) or is there an SG238 in there. Here are a couple of scans, if anyone would like to comment...

Many thanks for your help

These are all Typo. The 1d. lithograph plates [stones?] were probably first used in December 1901 and the electrotype plates were first used in September 1902. If you can get hold of the Brusden White Specialists Catalogue "Kangaroos and Early Federal Period" [published in 2004], you will find large examples of the two different types on page 1/186. The lithograph stamps look more like the London printings, but obviously have a different perforation [and watermark]. The lithos show much less shading on Mt. Wellington than the typos and some have a very washed out appearance similar to stamps that are classified as having "dry ink".

Hi Jeff,

Many thanks for the reply - I don't have the Brusden White, but I think I really do need to get one. Will make life easier for me, for sure.

Just one question - did the 1D Litho with V over Crown watermark ever have an OS and T punctures? If you have scans of them, I would greatly appreciate it, since I am in the middle of finishing a project on these and obviously, I will have a need for them, as I don't seem to have one.

Even better, if you have a copy of each that you would like to sell me, that would naturally be fantastic, so that I can be a lot more complete.

Cheers
Jerry

According to David Andersen's book, the OS perfin is known on 1d lithos but not the 'T'.

Thanks Ross and Jeff - I have David's book and did see that no sighting has been made. Just wanted to make sure, as I have a surprise for all the TPS members who are interested in the Government perfins on the Tasmanian State stamps.... in conjunction with David Coath, I have been working on a new online website catalogue covering all the official perfins of the Australian States and am in the final days of finalising the Tasmanian section of OS and T perfins.

I shall create a new post here once it is done, but I would hugely appreciate any help that the TPS members could give me in verifying what I have put together, particularly in the Pictorials and their shades as that is a specialist area in itself. Any comments, additions, deletions etc on the content would be most welcome to create as comprehensive and accurate a listing as possible before it is officially added to the perfins website.

Many thanks for your assistance...

Kind regards,

Jerry
