John --
I hope that I'm not leading you on a wild goose chase, but I believe that I have seen this before (although a quick look through my Commonwealth material did not find anything). I believe your stamp shows a very small part of a much larger roller-type cancel used on packages. I also recall it was used in Sydney (but not positive). If you're still interested in pursing the identification, I would start with a good reference on Sydney cancellations.

I think Jerry is correct. I have seen it on parcels as part of a large roller cancel. I do not have any scans unfortunately but this example either reads 'No 6 ' as in numeral 6 or November 6

Now that Jerry mentions it, I tend to agree.
I have seen similar fonts/size numerals on Sydney covers but thought they were some some sort of machine cancels. I have seen them through the 1930s and 1940s but never taken much notice.
I dont recall seeing anything like this from other States and definitely not Tasmania.

John --
I just happen to be reviewing the latest material in the April 2019 Tasmanian Stamp Auction and noticed a 1934 cover from Austria to Australia. On the reverse of the cover (shown below) is an example of the roller cancel that is on your 5/ roo. I know your were satisfied with the responses received but I thought I would end this topic with this example. I did say it was used for parcels but this happens to be a "normal" air mail cover.
