FIRST ISSUE of RUBBER DATESTAMPS for FDCs - A CENSUS

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:56 pm

A datestamp used in Tasmania during the 1970s but not included in the "Avery & Hardinge" listing is
this type (below) issued for the cancellation of First Day covers at official post offices.
Image
BURNIE / 16 MAY 1973 / TAS 7320

An identical type of rubber-faced datestamp appears to have been issued in all other states as well as
the NT and ACT.

I am uncertain as to whether all official post offices in Tasmania received a datestamp of this type (still
to be given a classification I believe) thus the reason for this post and commencement of a census.

Here are a few examples that I found during a quick hunt around the office:
Image
HOBART GPO / 16 OCT 1972 / TAS 7000 / 2

Image
MOONAH / 15 JUN 1976 / TAS 7009

Image
QUEENSTOWN / -9 MAY 1977 / TAS. 7467

Image
ULVERSTONE / 24 SEP 1979 / TAS 7315

If you have any examples of this datestamp type please post them in this thread. I will compile
a listing with our early and late dates within this post.

We only need a single image of each datestamp used at the official offices but your early and late
dates are required as well. Good hunting .... this is one area of modern postmark collecting where
"discoveries" are possible (and more than one or two as well) !!

This is the first of this type I have. The previous Burnie FDC was just the normal Burnie postmark (November 1969 on England Australia flight 50th anniversary). I have similar examples from Richmond Victoria from 1970 as well.

As these rubber datestamps are yet to be included in John's master list of Tasmanian datestamps (and they were issued to
and used at quite a number of post offices) this topic needs waking up!

Here's a few additions:

Please post additions in this topic (including better early and late dates) and I will amend the list above.

I have always assumed that these first day of issue datestamps existed and I am happy now to empirically verify that this assumption has proved to be correct.
