Pointing Fingers.

#1 Post by Colin Salt » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:37 am

Fig. 1 (slightly reduced) shows an undelivered cover addressed to Legana with a truncataed pointing finger which says 'Return to'. 'Sender' appears to be missing and the impression of the handstamp is sufficiently 'clean' to suggest that a section to the right has not printed for whatever reason. Fig. 2 shows a crop of the handstamp alone.

This handstamp is unusual in another way. All the pointing hands I have seen used in Tasmania show the backs of the fingers but not the thumb (see Fig 3 for an example) wheras in this instance the hand appears to be reversed with finger nails and thumb nail showing.

Questions.
1.Are other examples from Legana known and do they show Sender?
2.Are similar handstamps in use elsewhere?
