Tasmanian Postcard from Archives of C.G. Röder, Leipzig

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Fri May 20, 2016 2:40 pm

This unusual card landed on my desk this morning...

The view is captioned "River Inglis, Wynyard, Tasmania".

The card does not have a printed postcard back but a note indicates that it is from the archives of the huge
German postcard printer C.G. Röder of Leipzig.

Has anyone seen this card with a postcard back? Was there a publisher/client who ordered this (and other) card(s) to be printed?

Most interesting, Ross. I'll send the image off to Helmfried Luers who publishes "The Postcard Album" to see what he thinks.

My card shows this view but is captioned "an Anglers Paradise, river Inglis, Wynyard, Tasmania". The image is embossed into a 1 cm frame which consists of b&w image of timber.
The back is endorsed in green serif type " 721 S Carson Wynyard. Made in Germany."
While it's clearly the same image of course it may be by a different producer.
The Tas crest is at the top of the card. I can't read the date but its postally used franked with a 1d surcharge Pictorial.
An image would of course be much more useful than my text description but the net is still down here courtesy of Telsta.
Interestingly this is the 4 th card I have seen with the "Tasmania a Fishermans Paradise" caption. Others show the Emu River and Great Lake.

Thanks Pete ....hopefully Telstra will allow you to post an image soon.

P.S. Speaking as a "Burnie Boy", the Emu River has never been a "Fisherman's Paradise" during my lifetime (so far)!! :o

Here is the reply from Helmfried Leurs in Germany. He publishes "The Postcard Album" which is the authority on history of German postcard publishers.
The writing on back reads (translated) "Oceania", then below "archives copy, Roeder publishing dept, Leipzig" The number "5846" is likely a ppc dealer stock code.

The German handwriting is the modernised form of post 1950 date, not original for the time the card was issued.

This card has definitely a "Roeder smell" and I recall to have seen similar designs occasionally. However, not very common. The "pseudo" deckle-edge used here was more popular in the 1920-30's.

Card with blank reverso were usually for use of travelling trademen. Normally pasted into sample card books. Although I have some promo booklets with different designs on offer where regular cards (incl. address side) were aranged on dark colour/black card board.

With best wishes

I have encountered another example of the RIVER INGLIS card without a printed back .... it also has a 4 digit number written on the back but is printed on a different stock and is without the fancy edging of the card illustrated above.
