TASMANIAN STAMP POSTCARDS

The German company Ottmar Zieher produced the first Tasmanian stamp card. This was one card of a large set of every country or state in the world which issued its own stamps. The Tasmanian card is numbered No49 (Top left corner). The publishers details are printed faintly on the left of the picture. The original cards did not have a view printed in the middle.

"VSM SERIES"
"The VSM Series" is printed bottom left side on the back of the card. The No 49 is still on the front indicating their Zieher origin. This series was probably wholesaled by Zieher to VSM (Victorian Stamp Market). Cards either have no view or a printed view. Cards are very good qualitity.

I have seen the following 5 cards. Can you add to the list? Perhaps 12 to the set?

"O.S. & P.C. Sydney V.S.M. Melbourne" Series.

The most common issue found. The printing and paper quality is poor, embossing is rather crude. Each card has the name Cyril Dillon on the front lower right.

I have seen the following 8 cards, can you add to the listing? I have a feeling that there is 12 in the series.

"Sanatoria Home For Conumptive Women" Series

The rarest of the Tasmanian stamp cards. Published in 1905 and sold in aid of the Sanatoria Home for Consumptive Women.
Does anyone known what the purple cross with lettering stands for? (on back of card).

The purple handstamp (QVAS around the Maltese Cross) is generally held to be "Queen Victoria Ambulance Service" which was operated by the Order of St John in Australia since 1883. The Maltese Cross is part of the Order's symbols.
