TASMANIAN POST OFFICES ON POSTCARDS.

#1 Post by Mike » Thu Dec 17, 2009 4:06 pm

I thought it would be interesting to start a listing of Tasmanian post offices on postcards. So here goes.
Three "cracking" cards to start, all from Central Coast Municpality.

Image

Post Office Ulverstone. Pub by W A Skinner Ulverstone. used Sprent 24/4/09

Image

The Abbotsham post office (Castra has been crossed out) (see below). The smallest in Commonwealth!!
Note the post office sign under the verandah.

Image

Used Devonport West 22/12/05. No photographers name.

Image

Penguin Post office. real photo by E Winter Tasma Studio Burnie. c1910

QUEENSTOWN POST OFFICE c.1910

Image

I obtained this image from the SLT website so I don't have access to the back of the
card to confirm the publisher. I think the card is by E.M. White - if anyone can
confirm this or knows the correct publisher. please send me an e-mail or PM
and I will adjust the text/date accordingly.

SCOTTSDALE POST OFFICE c.1908

Image

I have only this image of the front of the card (which I assume to be by Spurling).
If anyone can provide the details including card index number, etc I will amend
this post accordingly.

I assume that the PO was the building on the left with the stripey-roofed verandah.

ZEEHAN POST OFFICE c.1950

I could only obtain an image of the front of this card. If
anyone can name a publisher or provide a more accurate date
please advise me by e-mail and I will update this post accordingly.

Here are two more, Triabunna and SPrings. The Springs was of course a 'Summer" Post Office only. There are better images of this popular post card subject but this winter photograph appears to be one of the less often seem images.

Waratah Post Office c1925. Real photo, no photogaphers name, but almost certain to be John (Jackie) Robinson.

This building still stands. When I was last in Waratah it was empty (12months ago). It had been used as an artist / gallery for a while. I presume the Post Office these days is at the shop which is located at the junction of Main street and the Savage River Road.

Not a postcard, but what a great historic photograph. Could be the only picture record of the early Loyetea Post Office. According to Hardinge opened in 1st October 1920. This photo appeared in the Advocate on 5/1/88.

No I only have this copy. Now known to be a "two off" card. I don't think there would be to many copies of this card about!

that's a great view Mike ...... we have quite a few postcard views of the Scottsdale PO on the BB now .... the locals must have been very proud of their PO!

The printing on the card looks familiar to that on a few real photo cards I have seen with an unidentified photographer. Would you be able to post a scan of the other side
of the card "for the record" please as it may help to identify further Tassie views by Williams?
