This real photo card has the 'Beattie Studios, Elizabeth St., Hobart.' stamp on the back.

It is probable that the scene is somewhere on Mt Wellington but with Beattie, it could have been anywhere!

Any ideas?

My guess Ross, is it could be some mining venture on the West Coast. It looks like early days work on an ore outcrop and/or the start of an addit into the hill.
It also looks like thick west coast vegetation.

But where the location is, is anyone's guess.

I think Mike may be right. My initial impression was, going by the eucalyptus which look like Regnans or Delagatensis, that it is wet schlerephyl forest - could be anywhere really where there is 40-50 inches a year of rainfall, and could easily be Mt Wellington.I thought initially maybe a tree had blown over pulling the vegetation and soil away from the rock.
However, the long spindly shrubs are almost definitely horizontal scrub( that has not become horizontal), which makes it the West Coast or South West Tas . Presumably the clearing around the rock face is man-made. That only narrows it down to about 5,000 Km sq

This real photo card is most likely to be of an excursion train on a 2' gauge tramway
in Tasmania. Any ideas as to which tramway and the location of the photo?
The carriage in the middle may assist with identification.

I think this real photo card is of the bridge over the Mackintosh River near Tullah. The tramway is wooden and linked Tullah with the Emu Bay Railway siding at Boco. This tramway was built in 1902. I guess postcard is c1907. In 1909 the Tullah line (metal rails) was extended to Farrell Junction on the EBR line and the line to Boco became a junction off the Farrell line.

The postcard view appears to be a Sunday picnic train with the special guests in the wagon with a roof.

The engine is a Krauss (has oval windows) and this train was nicknamed "The Puppy" as the train whistle sounded like a high pitched barking dog.

Can you tell me if Farrell Junction was the location of the Mt Farrell Post Office or if this is a separate place ?

I believe Mt Farrell post office was renamed Tullah c1910. Farrell Siding was railway station with a post office located at the junction of the Tullah tramway and the Emu Bay Railway line. The railway station only opperated as a post office for about 18 months from May 1907. I think it has RRR rating.

It looks like Risdon to me with Mount Direction across the river ...I think one can make out the landing for the Risdon Punt on the far shore too.

..... I can see the name of the vessel on the stern ....have you tried a 1200dpi scan of that bit?

Kerry, re Truck accident card. These cards are by Devonport photographer A W Marshall. I think the location is the old Bass Highwat between Don and Forth.

This road was probably a main highway. If you look at the telephone lines on the left of the picture you can see that the top four crossarms have trunk lines [as indicated by the distance between each pair of insulators]. The left pair of circuits on the top crossarm look like telegraph lines. The bottom crossarm was normally allocated to local subscribers. The PMG Dept. preferred most trunk routes to follow main highways [or railway lines if there were no suitable roads]. This of course, enabled quicker access to line faults and enabled the bypassers to report any obvious faults such as broken crossarms, twisted pairs of wires, flying insulators, leaning poles etc. etc.

Being a NW Coast lad (well until 1967 anyway), I too think that the spilt milk is on the Bass Highway between Forth and Don.

I have just spent quite a bit of time using TROVE searching 1940s copies of The Advocate and The Examiner but strangely,
the accident doesn't appear to have been reported.

Footnote: It must must be a very 'late' photograph by A.W. Marshall ..... Chris. Long lists his 'dates' as 1896 through to 1940
but adds "possibly later".
