I do not know this pier with rail lines.
Cheers Kerry

Lovely photo / group portrait! The location is New Norfolk, the rails would have been for transferring freight from a wagon to a river steamer.

No.2 - the cyclists. { http://tps.org.au/bb/download/file.php?id=2046 }

Comparing the building with the brick hotel next the bridge at Huonville may be useful. (sorry, I don't have an image 'to hand' at present)

Kerry's image "Photo postcard Posted Hobart 21-11-1910" see...... http://tps.org.au/bb/download/file.php?id=1991

This photo was probably taken from Argyle Street in close proximity to the Quaker's Hall. It looks down on to the Main Road at New Town
and the vacant block in the middle foreground is where Channel 6 built their television studios nearly 50 years later. Clare Street can be seen
behind and houses along Augusta Road to the left (some of these still exist today as well as the houses on the Main Road to the left foreground).

The large house with the tower (in the middle ground) is 'Werndee' which was built in 1903 for the Premier of Tasmania, Sir Neil Elliot Lewis.

Re, The cyclist card and hotel.

Had a look at my Huonville cards, Came to the conclusion that it is not the hotel near the bridge and river.

How about the Elwick Hotel Glenorchy?

See scan with another group of cyclists in front of Hotel.

I have since found a fairly contemporary view of the Grand Hotel at Huonville and yes, it's nothing like the hotel in the photo.

It can't be the Elwick Hotel either as the front of the building is not entirely of brick as the hotel in the first photo has. I note that
the name of the hotel is across the front of the building and is comprised of three words (the last is assumed to be 'Hotel').
Therefore, we are possibly looking for a town name of two words like 'Mole Creek' (no it's not there, I checked) if indeed the hotel
carries the location's name.

The above card of a hotel has the following writing in the centre

"J.C.Gavitt Licenced as a Hotel"

Gavitt was the licencee of the Elwick Hotel, Glenorchy.

This second photo of bike riders is an earlier photo then the 1st photo, perhaps 10 to 15 years earlier.

Is it possible that the wooden veranda area has been bricked in on the 1st bike rider photo?

I have been unable to find any photos of the Elwick Hotel on the net so far.

The veranda of the Elwick Hotel is more or less the same today.

I wouldn't pursue a "Glenorchy Connection" as there are no hills in the background when looking
down the main road towards Hobart as in the photograph.

Yes you are right Ross, it is not the Elwick Hotel.

Back to the drawing board.

The group of bike riders could well be at the Mole Creek Hotel. If you get a street view from Google maps you can see the centre door way, windows on either side and the public bar entrance on the right.

It been well over a year since we had a "Whereizit" inquiry so I thought that seeking the identity of this (to me) "magnificent
mystery mansion" in Hobart would make a good revival post for this topic.

The cards below are both by W. Fellowes (D.I.C.) and would have been taken sometime in the 1920s ... exactly which
year may never be determined as snowfalls to sea level were plentiful during the decade.

Can anyone name the mansion depicted? .... I thought it may have been "Maylands" in New Town but it isn't. The photos
are two from a group of six which all feature snow scenes in the city, North Hobart and South Hobart areas.

Here's another WHEREIZIT which will probably be much easier than the previous query about the sandstone mansion (any ideas yet?)

Part of the eastern side of Freycinet Peninsula perhaps?

The card is printed on Kodak Austral stock, is slightly smaller than the normal postcard dimensions but has not been reduced.

Hello Ross

Yes I think it is the Eastern Side of Freycinet. My guess it is a view looking south from the top of the hill above Bluestone Bay looking towards the Nuggets.

Judging by the printed postcard back, the card is from around 1910 but the photographer is not identified.

On the Tasman Peninsula I assume but where?? ....... Saltwater River perhaps but in an even more dilapidated state today?

Any assistance will be appreciated.
