CARDS PUBLISHED by A. MATHER & Co., HOBART

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Thu Sep 02, 2010 8:47 pm

Another interesting publisher of view cards before WWI was A. Mather & Co. of Liverpool Street Hobart.

This card would be from c.1905 (divided back but with "message space" still provided on the view side)

Mather published quite a number of attractive cards, many of which a now quite scarce to rare. Do any members
have cards which may be from the same series as this one?

Where a title is duplicated I have two different cards. I have not included deatils of mint/used or any reference numbers as the paste from Excel did not preserve tabulation. If anyone would like particular scans I will do my best to oblige, but it may take a while!

G'day Ross,
I have some of the Mather cards the same style as the Shot Tower card.

Cheers Kerry

This A. Mather & Co. card is particularly interesting in my opinion.

A photograph of Hobart with the Domain and railway yards in the foreground has been 'processed' to give
the appearance of a painting. The postcard back suggests that this card is of American manufacture.

I note that Patrick has recorded this view above ...is this the same card as listed?

Does anyone have other Mather cards of this type (i.e. painting style images) with the same back?

I think that the painted aspect of the card Ross shows is due to the hand colouring applied to the b&w printed card. Here is the example I have - it looks very much the same as Ross' card (except his isn't individualised by having a corner missing).

This card if from the first series of Mather cards, which were probably printed by Osboldstone & Co. in Melbourne. The back layout is the same as Osboldstone used on some of the Robert Jolley cards.

Thanks Des .... and there I was thinking that the 'painting' effect was done on purpose when it was just some second-rate colouring! :)

Yes, it would have been most unusual if the card had been of American manufacture but it is an early card and Osboldstone may have 'lifted' the design on the back from an American card or similar.

Does anyone have any similar cards ..... from an early series perhaps?
