CARDS PUBLISHED by A.M. ROSE, STATIONER, SCOTTSDALE

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Wed Jan 12, 2011 9:08 pm

This is the first pre-WWI printed card with the publisher listed as being "A.M. Rose, Stationer, Scottsdale, Tas."
that I have seen. The stamp box is covered with a 1d Pictorial cancelled at Scottsdale in 1908 possibly obscuring the printed
place of manufacture but it is most likely of Germany origin.

This card looks very much like a Spurling published card of the period. Does anyone have anymore examples from Rose's
"The Photo Print Series"? Does anyone have a card published by Spurling that uses this photograph? Does anyone have any
examples of cards that were probably (or definitely) produced by Spurling for of another seller?

Card collectors may have seen this card (from the 1920s) in another topic this time with the publisher listed as a W.E. Rose* who was also
(thanks to Mike's info) a stationer at Scottsdale. It is interesting to note that this card looks almost identical to the real photo cards
produced by George Rose (from Victoria) at the time.

A similar question to that asked about the previous card then... did Rose Stereograph produce cards on behalf of another seller.

* does anyone know the relationship between A.M. Rose and W.E. Rose?

P.S. ...yes, it does say "... Bridport, Tasmanai" which I think supports a little my "Printed in Germany" theory.

Hi Ross.

I have this card and another titled "FARM SCENE, SCOTTSDALE" from the same series. I don't believe these cards are anything to do with Spurling but rather are tied to Selwyn Cox. Another card by A.M. Rose is from the Photostyle Series (with brown "picture frame" titled "WATER WHEEL, BRID RIVER, SCOTTSDALE WATER SUPPLY".

Selwyn Cox seems to have produced or organised cards on behalf of local publishers from a German printing firm in Saxony usually numbered from 500-600 (the Rose Scottsdale cards are the only ones I have seen that are not numbered nor carry any connection to Cox on the cards) and mostly produced for small town outlets with the names of stationers etc. who sold the cards on the back of the cards. A lot of the cards within this number range have the Cox logo (S over C in a diamond) on front of card or have Selwyn Cox printed on the back as the publisher.

Photo Print Series cards, like the Rose Scottsdale cards, can be found with nos. around 509-511 for Hart & Co., Campbell Town (being views in and around Campbell Town). Other cards in the same gloss B&W format are Burnie area cards around nos.523-526 but from the Wynphotoprint Series for either G. Carroll, Burnie or Published by Selwyn Cox, Launceston; No.529 "W.E. Kerrison & Co. The People's Draper & Clothier, Beaconsfield", 539 Wynphotoprint "In Denison Gorge" P.P.C. Co., Launceston; and Photostyle Series around nos. 554-559 Wynyard area views with either Selwyn Cox, Launceston or J.H. Stutterd & Co., Wynyard printed on back as the publisher. McVilly & Little also used this format of card from this same printer in one of their series of numbered cards of Hobart area views.

Other Selwyn Cox cards from the Photostyle Series (same "picture frame" format as the Rose Water Wheel card mentioned above) are around nos. 515-521 being Ulverstone views for Skinner or S.Cox, & Burnie views for Turner(Burnie); nos.527-528 Devonport views for A.W. Marshall; 532-534 Devonport views for Central Stationery Depot, Devonport; 538 G&A Ellis, Ulverstone; 540-546 Burnie views for either G. Carroll or Selwyn Cox.Some cards in this group are in colour while others are sepia.

Other format types are embossed oval scenes: 539-540 Selwyn Cox or PPC Co. Launceston area views, and 549 Oval Series (no publisher given on this one). Photo Series Nos. 547-548 glazed rectangular B&W Burnie views for G. Carroll. Wynphotoprint Series Nos. 583-588 grey & white Stanley views for Lean & Smith, Stanley; Elite Series No.590 a multi-view card for Lean & Smith (this has Selwyn Cox publisher details obliterated and the Lean & Smith details added). Nos.535-537 Central Stationey Depot and Nos. 550-555 Len Wilkinson, Launceston - both these publishers being from the Ideal Series which are oval coloured views with brown "picture frame" on a yellowish card.

Whether the numbering system was instigated by Selwyn Cox or perhaps applied by the Saxony printers (in which case the cards for Marshall, Skinner and some others may have nothing to do with Selwyn Cox) I do not know.

With regards to the other W.E. Rose Scottsdale real photo card - there are many series of cards produced by either the Rose Stereograph Co. or the Valentine Publishing Co. or both, for local small town publishers throughout Australia, usually in a numbered series but not always. F.M. Kennedy's East Coast cards was another example of these cards.

This card numbered '659' has A.M. Rose, Scottsdale stated as the publisher .... it definitely isn't
a Selwyn Cox card and has a postcard back similar to those used by Spurling & Son. Does anyone
know if this card is from the Spurling catalog?

Has anyone found a 'connection' between W.E. and A.M. Rose yet?

Mr F. H. (Fred) ROSE was the brother of William Ernest ROSE (who was father of 'Bricky' and originator of Scottsdale's Roses Newsagency). Fred Rose came to the North East around 1903, aged 28, opened a store at Branxholm when the railway arrived in 1911, then in 1919 opened a store at Derby. In 1915, at the age of 40 he married in Branxholm, and went on to have four children. When he was aged around 70 he invented and perfected a 'Trafficator' (apologies for the poor quality picture), a device which sat on top of your car and showed indicator lights and a stop sign, which he patented and had produced in factories in Melbourne. F. H. Rose died at Branxholm in 1956, aged 81. I wonder if any Trafficators still exist in sheds in Branxholm?

Quite late to conversation. This is from Dorset History group and explains some of the Fi=one connections. I remember “Bricky” as a child as owner of Roses News agency in Scottsdale and also as Warden for quite some time.
