UNLISTED TASMANIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS

#1 Post by Mike » Sun Nov 20, 2011 3:48 pm

There are quite a number of Tasmanian photographers who produced real photo Post Cards and who are not listed in Chris Long's book "Tasmanian Photographers 1840 to 1940.

I picked this card up a few weeks ago. This group of people are at Fern Tree Bower. Card is to a Miss Bird and is from G Bingham. Date is 17/8/07.

The photographer is W.D. Valentine who is listed in the 1913 Tas PO Directory as a hairdresser at 41 Murry Street Hobart.

Found this real photo card today by photographer G. GLOVER. "Long" in his book does not list him. In 1913 a Geo Glover lived at 5 Lochner St Hobart.
I wonder if this is him. Has anyone else come across G Glover? The card has Kodak / Austral on the back with solid circles in each corner.

Real Photo postcard by M Elliott, Hobart. Long lists I.R.Elliott and Phyllis Elliott. The 1914 Tasmanian PO directory lists a Mrs M Elliott, grocer , 224 Murray St Hobart. Could she be the photographer?

Is it possible to find the registered owner of the motorbike 671?

Another photographer not listed by Chris Long is "Synnott" - I acquired this card recently.

I would "date" it c.1925. Any information welcome.

I have a copy of the same card, but I have noted the spelling as Synnott. Mine is not postally used.

UNLISTED TASMANIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS

STEPHEN HOOKER PHOTOGRAPHER WARATAH: HAS ANYONE HEARD OF HIM?

In a recent lot of postcards purchased there was one by "S. Hooker" of the "Main Street Waratah". There was another of "Ringtail Falls Waratah" but no photographer id, another of a mill processing scene with no title or photographer id. All are identical processing being black and white with white borders and on "Empire" postcard paper. Another was on younger Kodak paper from the 1920-30 period of the Waratah Water Race (I believe).

I have not heard of this photographer before so did a bit of sleuthing through Trove. Stephen was born in Ballarat and moved to Waratah at an early age and started work in the ore dressing mill going on eventually to manager the mill. On 11.3.1886 he married Edith Lucas (of the North West Bay Lucas').

He was very active in the Methodist church being Sunday School Super for 12 years, circuit stewart and trustee. He was also very active in the Waratah Camera Club giving "practical" lectures on negatives (Trove 1908). The club also "investigated" various kinds of printing paper and postcards. It would not be hard to speculate that members of the Club produced their own postcards.

When the mine closed down temporarily in 1921 Stephen and Edith moved to Madden Street Devonport where they stayed for 15 years before moving to Ballarat in 1936. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Devonport before moving.

However during this time and right up until he left Stephen undertook the photography, developing and printing of Johnston's Pharmacy in Devonport. Perhaps the postcard on Kodak paper was a trip back to Waratah to photograph the district with newer materials and processes. The Kodak postcard is untitled.

Trying to put an date to the Main Road Waratah is difficult but a similar Spurling postcard showing the same scene, but different angle, has white picket fencing on the left hand (post office) side. Stephens postcard has post and rail on the left hand side identical to the right hand side of the road near the railway line. The bonus of Stephens postcard is that it has the train in the photo. I belive it preceeds the Spurling postcard as do the some of the others.

Hope someone can throw some light on this or alternatively I may have switched on a light for someone else. Will bring them to the next meeting. When I learn how to post photos I will.

Kind regards to all John C

Just had a look at Ross' request to find and unanswered query and try and help to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the BB in July. Why wait?

Mike had a query on the photographer and rego on his postcard query of 22.8.2013. Cannot help with the rego but a search of Trove threw up a Mercury article on 11.2.1926 on "International Art" in which a Mr. M Elliott of Montpellier Road was displaying his photos in Italy. An interesting read and ties in with the Kodak paper used.

Perhaps this will help open up more avenues for investigation. Happy sleuthing.

Regards to all JC

Re Stephen Hooker

I have a Waratah postcard dated 15/8/06 from the same correspondence as John C. No name markings on the front, but is signed "Fred Hooker Waratah Tas."

The same person? Is Stephen Fred?? The Tasmanian Post Office directory 1904 lists Stephen Hooker as a miner. The 1913 directory lists him as a batteryman. There are no other Hooker's listed under Waratah.

Your comments are welcome.

Chris Long lists page 62, "Hooker, S Postcards of Waratah, c1912" No other information.

Found this information on Tasmanian Archives Online.

"Stephen Hooker was a member of the Waratah Camera Club. He was appointed Treasurer on 7 July 1908 and delivered lectures to the Club on negatives; snapshots of Sydney and methods of prospecting for gold, coal and tin via a lantern slide lecture.

Hooker was a battery manager at the Mount Bischoff Mine and a member of the Mt Bischoff Provident Hospital Board until he resigned in August 1914.

His marriage notice appeared in the Mercury 3 April 1886 p1 recording that on March 11 at Primitive Methodist Church, Waratah by the Reverend T. Roberts, Stephen, third son of Mr James Hooker, Yarowee, Victoria married Edith, second youngest daughter of Mr Alfred Lucas, Waratah (and North-West Bay).

He was still in Waratah in 1918 when peace was celebrated. His son Private Gordon Hooker, who had enlisted in Melbourne, was wounded in France. A letter from his son from Poziers had been published in the North West Advertiser and Emu Bay Times on the 11 Nov 1916 p8. His daughter Daisy left Waratah to attend Teacher's Training School, Launceston in August 1917.

He apparently retired to 5 Madden Street, Devonport as indicated by an article in the Mercury, March 11 1936 about his Golden Wedding celebration."

Thanks Mike that is a great piece of detective work. Now I know who I was bidding against for the three lots of postcards that night. Glad they came back to Tassy.

The golden wedding write up in the Advocate gives a good overall history of Stephen Hooker and his family. My postcards to Rose Bestwick are signed by "Will" and "Eliz". These are on Spurling postcards and only one my Hooker postcards to her is used. I think it is great that you have Freds signature on his dads postcard as this tends to tie it all together.

The "Will" on my postcard is I believe William Bestwick who owned the hairdresser/tobacconist shop (possibly stocked the postcards). Quiet a character making the Examiner 15.7.1907 for being charged by the Waratah police for "drunk and doisorderly" "convictions have been made previously". Obviously kept Waratah entertained.

Makes sense for Fred to use his dads postcards as they were possibly cheaper "mates rates".

We could put our heads together and do a history on this photographer for the archives so that people in future will have a record.

Regards and thanks JC

Embossed in the lower right corner on the picture side is the name "E.Finch". It is rather hard to see in the scan. On the back of the card E.Finch has written a few details.
I have been unable to find any information on this photographer. Can you help with any information?

Mike,

I have searched "high and low" for any references to an E. Finch as a photographer but have drawn 'a blank' unfortunately.

I surmise that perhaps he was a (very) private photographer who owned a embossing device with his name thereupon. :?

"Finch" is a "Tasmanian name" both in the south and the north so it is always possible that something may eventually turn up.

I recently came across another real photo card by A.C. Ball .... interesting to note that the card is dated the day after
Mike's card (see a few posts above) ... it would have been a long way from National Park to Mole Creek in 1920!!

Also of interest is the similar numbering in the stamp box as well as an additional 'code' ...in this case '65th11' ('90th11' on the other card)

I recently came across another real photo card attributed to "Synnott", this time with a first initial "W"

Again the card has a view from the New Norfolk area and was published by D.I.C. (Fellowes)

Another Tasmanian Photographer not listed in Chris Long's book Tasmanian Photographers 1840 - 1940.
This photographer is "A .Lockwood, Photographer Scottsdale". The photograph is of a very young-looking WW1 army recruit or perhaps a school cadet?
