Selwyn Cox Cards Produced for Local Publishers: a Survey

Selwyn Cox (Launceston) produced cards from their house stock of "Wynphotoprint Series" images for smaller local publishers.

This card "S.C. Wynphotoprint No.67" has, as the publisher, "Alfred Brown & Co., Longford" printed on the back. It was used from
Campbell Town in 1906.

This card "S.C. Wynphotoprint No.107" has, as the publisher, "Dudgeon & Dudgeon, General Printers, Burnie, Tas." printed on the back.
It was used from Burnie in 1906. The photo index number 'A.26913' (well I think it is) can be seen on this card.

These 2 are similar. The Burnie postcard also refers to Dudgeon & Dudgeon, General Printers, Burnie, Tas. This card was used from Burnie in 1906.

Thanks Geoff ... I've not seen a card with Geo. Harley as publisher before.

This card "A Reach of the River Leven, Ulverstone..." (Wynphotoprint No.120) lists
the well-known producer of postcards from the Ulverstone area W.A. Skinner as the
publisher. The card was postally used at Ulverstone in 1907.

I think we are already starting to see a fairly 'firm' period of use i.e. 1906/07 ... has anyone

I have been through three boxes of cards and extracted the Wynphotoprint cards that were in them. These are now in their own album, so something good has come of this!The following that I have found have dates in 1907 or later:

Selwyn Cox seems to have been very prolific in producing names and numbers. Perhaps those who have collected his cards for a period could enlighten me on some aspects:

1. Firstly, the name WYNPHOTOPRINT. This might imply that he was a photo printing shop, but I can see no mention of this. So why did he use this name? What photos was he printing?

2. What was the connection between WYNPHOTOPRINT and PPC Co? Is the former a series name, and the latter his company name? Did he as the PPC Co publish cards that were not WYNPHOTOPRINT?

3. Cards carry a number such as A25980. I assume this is a photo number? Quite a large collection if it started from 1. Or whose collection was it?

4. He published very many different cards over only a few years - my highest number is No.174. (He's almost up there with Ash Bester). Does the numbering start at 1?

5. So who did print his cards?

Sorry for all the questions. There's so much good information available about him that it leaves these questions begging.

A little additional information on the image of Burnie (an important shipping port) posted earlier.

The same image is shown in Long's book (page 119) and is on a card with the photographer named as E Warde with the image titled Breakwater at Burnie.

I have a copy of Railway Viaduct Near Burnie No. 523 , advertising G. Carroll, Bookseller and stationer, Wilson St, Burnie postmarked Hobart June 1910 which is later than the usual use dates recorded so far.

This "Wynphotoprint" card with YORK SCHMIDT & Co., SHEFFIELD attributed as publishers has been
reported by Patrick in a previous post. The card has been used but unfortunately the franking has been
removed so the date of posting is not available. Please note that the back of the card is printed in black.

This "Wynbromoprint" card No.215 DISTANT VIEW OF LONGFORD. TAS. has not been recorded above though the publisher
(A. Brown & Co., The Cash Emporium, Longford) has. The card has been used "under cover" so the date of posting is unknown.

I have just noticed on EBay (item 400385120965) a copy of "A Distant View if Deloraine", Wynphotoprint #173, publisher Geo. Harley, Deloraine. However, the printing of his name etc. is in a much duller green than the rest of the back of the card, suggesting it was added in a separate operation.

Are there any other examples of advertising cards produced under the "Wynphotoprint banner"? If Selwyn Cox produced a card
for one hotel it is likely that other hotels in Northern Tasmania were similarly supplied.

It is interesting that Mike's card is attributed to "The Photoglase Series" and not to "Wynphotoprint". Perhaps Mike could add an image
of the relevant bit on the back of the card to this topic.

I have stayed out of this post as I have my cards sorted by town / area, so to find and list cards by Selwyn Cox / Wynphotoprint would be a big task and I do not have the time at the moment.

I have two copies of the Commercial Hotel Wynyard, have scanned the back of each card. "The Photoglase Series" and "The Wynphotoprint Series".
