Likely philatelic cover Launceston to Hobart 6 January, 1903

#1 Post by Postagedues » Fri Sep 23, 2016 6:54 am

This cover, addressed to Mrs K Stockton at 129 Selton Tce, Hobart raises a couple of questions:

Overpayment of the 1d rate suggests that it is philatelic
I can't find Selton (or Sefton) Tce is my google maps search, does anyone know its location?
Does anyone have similarly adressed covers?

Thanks,

John

Cant offer anything specific . I have never heard of Selton Terrace in Hobart and a newspaper search of Trove did not produce anything.
Somewhere online there is a listing of Hobart residents and addresses. Its a database taken from old Rates notices. I cannot find it at the moment but its there somewhere. If you can locate that online it might shed some light on the address.

As the stamp is not tied to the cover there is no reason to assume that it actually went through the post. I have checked a list of Hobart ratepayers published in The Gazette in the 1890s and "Selton Street" doesn't get a mention.

Conclusion: this is a 'contrived cover' (to a bogus address).

Thanks for that, far more contrived than I thought.

There are a number of forged Aust Sates covers around at the moment. Not that this cover is necessarily in that category but it would be interesting to know the provenance .

It was an ebay pick up some years ago, cost me $10 from memory.

Thanks Postagedues. I'm not sure if the cover is genuine or not.Its not in the came category as the more recent forgeries which were generally very expensive if they were real. I dont recall seeing many, if any local underpaid letter rate covers during this period. Extremely uncommon I would think.
