Reactions to the Pictorial Stamps - interesting letter card

#1 Post by admin » Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:13 pm

I recently bought an interesting Letter Card - the "Great Lake - a Fishermans Paradise", with BN 62 of New Town cancelling the 2d pictorial and a Newtown and Hobart CDS dated Jy 10 00.
On reading the message to a Mr Graham in the UK, I thought the comment regarding reactions to the new Pictorial stamps may be of interest.
Also of philatelic interest are the comments about the construction of the then new Hobart GPO.It seems the writer may have worked for the Post Office, at least, he was heading to Beaconsfield to work as the Assistant to the Postmistress.
Of more general interest are the comments about news of the relief of Mafeking which had recently reached Hobart and the Gun salute, subsequent parade of Lodges and scaffolding erected in front of Parliament House, were Lady Gormanston ( wife of the then Governor) displayed herself.
The reference to the new stamps says ".. There have (sic) been a great outcry against them[the new Pictorial stamps]. Signboards as some have called them. " It seems anything new is always going to cause an uproar.
The card is show here and also the text on the back, for those who may be interested.
