Assistance please! Using the "Green Books", I could not find any towns ending in "VILLE" that used the Type 1a cancel. The ones I did find (Huonville, Jetsonville, Orrville, and Pontville) all used Type 1. Can anyone help me this town name? (The date appears to be OC 19 97, but that's a real guess on the year.) Re 1/- Platypus Revenue. 2 Sep 1902 Can anyone recognise the postmark 'STAMP A..' ?
I feel that it is probably an internal Revenue marker and not a genuine postmarker.

This is the original type U2 CDS that lasted until about 1914. It's pretty scarce on pictorials, mainly used on parcels I suspect. It's most commonly seen on the 1/- tablet.

By the pictorial era it's 4 digit year had been reduced to two digits.

I have just purchased this cover for the Winchelsea numeral upon it. Can anyne help identify the boxed red mark? The auction description was 'Monard's Free' but I thought it may be St Leonards Free.

It is the "Ship Letter Inwards Free" marking applied to all mail coming into Hobart by Ship. See Green books vol. 1 page 21 Fig.45

Hi folks,

The postmark in the image has defeated two of us.

The date is clearly DE 4 02.

The four letters above right look like FIOH but under a magnifier they could be FICH. The F might actually be an E.

Just a querie regarding the type of Gordon postmark on this 2d pictorial.
I can find Gordon Type 1 in Hardinge's guide, however no mention of a cds with a time code as per type 3 or with sidebars for that matter.
As the stamp with overprint released Oc 1912, is this a new type of cds for pictorials?
Am I missing something obvious?

This postmark is not of Tasmanian origin. When the stamp was issued it was valid for use in all Australian states and this example was used north of 40°S .... I believe there are a '"Gordons" in VIC, NSW and SA

Can anyone assist with identifying the following Hobart postmark using Hardinge's code #?
It is 22mm in diameter.
I think it is 1(iv)(dot stops) but with no code and no year plugs??
Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hi, this is the Type 1c(ii). You can tell by the oval "o" of Hobart, the other four CDS have a round "O". IN 1910-11 at the end of it's life it appears without a code and without a yer, like this example.

With the oval 'o' I was expecting a look of 0 like many of our WA postmarks, not a flattened/squashed oval.

After too long a time I have decided to bring some order to my collection of the larger post offices of Launceston and Hobart during the Pictorial period.

While trying to identify the many Launceston cds I appear to have found a Launceston Type 1 cds with solid stops and code "H" (wide). Dated SP 17 00 it falls within the correct period but it is not known with any code.

I have also attached a scan of the Type 1(iv) to demonstrate the very small zeros used for the year at that time in Launceston and the narrow type of "H" used. Sorry it is not in perfect alignment. Can anyone confirm whether or not it is a T1(solid stops).

Diameter of the cds is 24mm and the lettering conforms with Fig 96 in the Green Books i.e Type1(solid stops). I did think it may be Type1(i) or variants T(ii) T(iii) but the diameter is too large and the lettering of these cds is wide and not as narrow as the T1(solid stops). They do however have code "H" and fall within the use period shown on the image. Cds width in T(i), (ii) and (iii) ranges between 22mm and 23mm.

The first Green Books noted that only two examples of the Launceston T1(solid stops) had been recorded, one on a stamp and the other as a backstamp. The second Green Book indicated that T1(solid stops) had now been seen on a 3d Pictorial dated 10th June 1901, hence this is where the Latest Use Date originates. It would be interesting to find out how many exist given their apparent rarity when the Green Books were written.

Can anyone help or post an image of the Launceston T1(solid stops).

Does Launceston no Tasmania exist with code L? I found this in a recent lot.

In the First Allocation of Barred Numerals Lake River was allocated BN 41 which is rated 4R. The numeral is also known in mss, rated 2R and the post office in mss "Lake" rated 4R.

I have attached a scan of 1d imperf Chalon with what appears to be "Lak" no "e". Could anyone help me identify if this is a partial Lake River mss.
