2d Pictorial with mss. 'Paid" marking?

#1 Post by admin » Thu Aug 28, 2014 2:28 pm

This faint manuscript cancel on a 2d Pictorial has puzzled me for a long time.
I finally got around to manipulating it in Photoshop and now that the script is more obvious, it seems to be "Paid", plus date 28/9/11 and a figure in pounds - £2/2/0, plus initials.
Given its a 1911 date then it should not be a revenue cancellation on this stamp, which in any case would not normally say 'Paid".
I assume therefore that its just some annotation with no postal relevance that happened to be written across the stamp.
Can anyone confirm this or suggest another possibility?
The original and an enhanced version which shows the manuscript are shown below.
